inspired by my late oranda, hannibal.
please note that no fish is the same, and fish care differs per species. the information on this page is only meant to provide the bare basics for oranda fish care. doing extensive research before acquiring a pet is always important!

(nor should any fish), and their tendency to stay small in small environments is nothing more than a harmful myth! your pet will love you if you provide them with a sizeable tank (30g per fancy goldfish, the more the better!), and don't forget adequate filtration!

some interior design
some fish, but fancy goldfish in particular love to graze. you'll be able to watch them scooping up sand and spitting it back out for hours. your oranda will love you if you coat the bottom of their tank in sand! try to avoid gravel or small rocks, as these are abrasive and can damage your goldfish, or even get stuck in their throat while they graze - this can be fatal.

aquarium nitrogen cycle
setting up a brand new fish tank will require you to cycle the water for several weeks to ensure the water is safe for your new fishy friends to inhabit - this has to do with the nitrogen cycle, and it's an important step of the process! you will need an aquarium test kit to monitor your tank's water.

a new friend
once your water is safe, it's time to look for someone to inhabit it! have a close look at the petstore fish to make sure they're healthy (no spots, torn fins or raised scales) and pick one you like. if you're wanting to add several fish to your new and cycled tank, space it out over several weeks, no matter how tempting it might be to buy several at once. this way you'll make sure your filter can handle the bioload and the chances of unexpected casualties will be slim!
