"I, Mistwing, medicine cat of DawnClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help he will serve his Clan for many moons. Redpaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?"

"I do."

"Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your true name as a medicine cat. Redpaw, from this moment you will be known as Redfern. StarClan honors your kindness and perseverance, and we welcome you as a full medicine cat of DawnClan."

I miss Mistwing," the medicine cat mumbled through a bundle of herbs before turning to his patient. Mistwing had died only two moons ago and Redfern felt the effects of her death heavily. He missed hearing his mentor grumble about how the warriors were as whiny as kits as she sorted the herbs and howled instructions back to him. The medicine cat was cranky and stubborn in her old age but never did she lose the caring heart she had all her life.

"Me too. Mistwing was a grumpy old badger but at least she didn't leave me waiting with a thorn in my pad," Hawkclaw meowed teasingly back to Redfern. The two were practically brothers, being raised in the same litter despite having different parents, and Redfern had grown used to Hawkclaw's playful teasing all through life. Redfern grumbled behind his herb bundle before dropping it at Hawkclaw's paws. He carefully examined the warrior's paw and gave the thorn a quick pull once located. "You're free, oh great and powerful warrior," he mewed with an amused twitch of his whiskers. "Just give it a good lick and you'll be fine, it was hardly bigger than a mouse's toe."

As Hawkclaw left the medicine den, Redfern turned his attention back to sorting herbs. "Marigold, tansy, watermint..." he stopped and frowned, staring into what should be his store of watermint that was now dried and crumbled. He brushed the old stems out with his tail, scooting them into a pile before making his way out of the medicine den. Clan life was already bustling and he twitched his tail in greeting to those gathered around the fresh-kill pile as he bounded to the tunnel leading out of camp.

The sun showed that it was around noon as Redfern made his way through the forest and down to the river. The forest was starting to feel safe again after the incident with twolegs dumping rubbish a half moon ago when DawnClan's deputy, Rippletail, was severely sickened after having eaten a poisoned mouse. Despite Redfern's best efforts, the deputy never fully recovered and was left weakened with no choice but to retire to the elder's den earlier that morning. This left Adderstar with the duty of having to appoint a new deputy before moonhigh but the leader was still mulling over her options. Redfern shook away the thought and sniffed around for the herbs he had come to collect. "Watermint is usually closer to this side of the border," he muttered as he spotted the precious bunches on the opposite bank that marked MistClan's territory.

This is medicine cat business, Redfern reminded himself as he begrudgingly placed a paw in the water and began to cross. Halfway into his crossing a growl sounded from behind him and chilled him to the bone. He was too intently focused on the smell of the herbs that surrounded him but now that his attention had been broken all he could smell was the fox as the scent engulfed him along with his own fear scent. This is it, I'm going to die. I haven't the skills to fight off this fox and there isn't a warrior in sight! He shook intensely as he turned to face the snarling beast, only a tail length from him now with teeth bared and malice in it's eyes.

Suddenly, a shadow crossed over the two of them and a piercing shriek sounded from above as a bird dived down towards them both. In a split second, the fox was distracted from Redfern and he scrambled to the other side of the stream's bank, diving under a bush to watch the scene unfold before him. The bird was lashing at the fox with talons outstretched and quickly drove the beast away before taking back to the skies.

Still in shock, Redfern hid under the bush until he could calm himself and be absolutely sure both predators were gone. Finally he crawled out from his hiding place and bounded across the bank and spotted a single feather left behind at the scene. He surveyed it closer, his eyes growing wide with shock as he identified the bird it had belonged to. A hawk! I was saved by a hawk... The claws of a hawk had driven away danger; it was a sign from StarClan!

Quickly snatching up the feather and forgetting all about the watermint he had originally come to collect, he raced back through the forest, stopping for nothing until he burst back through the camp entrance. Eyes darted to stare at him as he scrambled his way to the leader's den in such a hurry that one would think the Clan was actively under attack. Adderstar turned to stare at him, her ears pricked and expression full of concern but Redfern placed the feather at her paws and began to explain before she could get a meow out.

After a moment of quiet consideration, Adderstar nodded. "I do believe you are correct, I cannot deny the importance of this sign," she meowed.

Redfern heaved a sigh relief and looked his leader in the eyes, "The Clan will be protected by the claws of a hawk. Hawkclaw must be named the new deputy of DawnClan."
