Bekhar
Created; Little is known about the origins of the Bekhar, other than the fact they have been seen to inhabit the eastern waters of Garé. It has been theorised they were created by the elder gods around the same time as the Veline. The Bekhar have not evolved largely from their ancient time, whether they have not needed to or are unable to is unknown. Despite this they have been included as one of the four core races as they have been around for thousands of years.
General Overview; Ear-fins that mesh into hair, dorsal appendage, (bending back into hair, hidden when surfaced,) clawed/skeletal arms and hands, some kind of tail, (shark, eel, fish.)
Personality Traits; Short tempered, amoral, cold, cruel, deceitful, disorganised, envious, hostile, opinionated, pugnacious, thievish, self-sufficient, ungrateful, corrupt, eloquent, logical, spontaneous.
Clans/Tribes;The Bekhar have inhabited the eastern coast of Gare since the creation of the world, (at least as far as anyone's living descendants knows.) Haunting the deeper parts of the southern port all the way north through Valen Isle, the Bekhar are usually seen hunting in threes; a pair remain close and surface to draw the attention of any humans nearby, disguising themselves as lost swimmers, or more often, attractive people. The third hunter will remain hidden, on look-out for anything that may jeopardise their hunt. Tribes have formed over this race's lifetime. Though their upper body appearances and hunting techniques haven't changed, evolution depending on diet has. in their early years, the majority of the Bekhar would lure and feast upon humans as their soul source of food. This was quick, easy and at the time, manageable. As the human population began to thin, the Bekhar were commanded by the Veline to cease and desist this diet. Though all Bekhar detested the elven race, they raised the point of their only food source going extinct in the next few years if something did not change. Humans were already at constant war with the Maldecti, harshly reducing their numbers by the month. A considerate few Bekhar took this commandment as mere suggestion and began to incorporate reef fish into their diets, eventually this led to their habitat decreasing to Valen Isle and the outer islands. Others decided on larger fish, and so the hunting of sharks and whales began. A smaller group was left, struggling with their primal instincts and logic of the inevitability of humans no longer being around meaning their own demise. At first this group ignored the meddling Veline's words, giving into their body's wants, but soon the group dwindled to what could be called modern Gare, current day. This separation of diets allowed evolution to shape something new out of its already perfected predators. Tails and fins eventually changed, flattened, sharpened, curved, serrated, all depending on the individuals diet and hunting habits.
Relations; The Bekhar have the disadvantage of being sea only dwelling creatures, though this may have worked out in their favor in the long run. Isolated and aggressive by nature, the Bekhar were rarely forced to communicate or even see other races. Minus the occasional feast on a human or two, the Veline attempting to shape the Bekhar's ancient traditions or part of their territory being claimed by one irksome Maldecti clan, the Bekhar remained isolated and ignorant of what the other races were doing. If they had it their way, they would never have even the tiniest bit of contact, as it was always a nuisance and a hindrance. Humans they regarded as worthless flesh, only to be devoured and never spoken to. Maldecti were seen as inexplicably prideful with a knack for beginning wars they couldn't end. The Veline though, were detested beyond all means. Disgust would cross any Bekhar's face at the mention of them. Meddling and needlessly parental of anyone or anything they crossed. The Bekhar were glad to see their demise, self-appointed dethronement and eventual death.
History; Said to have been part fish, part human and part... something else, the Bekhar were known as the most skilled hunters, but now were unsure to even exist. Folk-tales would be passed down through families for generations, a warning to never wander at the waters edge for long and to trust your instincts when encountering strangers. The Bekhar managed to keep their heads out of any major wars the land-dwellers began, rarely losing their populace to anything but old age. Staying in the shadows of the deep seas allowed them an easy life and kept the others guessing at their existence.
Alignment; Neutral evil.
Race Lands; The Bekhar have inhabited almost all of the eastern coast and a great part of the Krin Sea for millenniums, rarely changing their largely populated areas.
Religion; As a whole, the Bekhar race are not religious but not anti-religious. Their stance on a higher being varies between individuals but is largely considered as something not worth thinking or caring about. They are predominantly neutral in all stances and would rather focus on their next meal.
Languages; Bekhar have their own language as does every race on Gare, but due to their prey, some are well-versed in the common human tongue. Some are also able to roughly interpret Velin. Their own language is a combination of throat noises, gill movement and hand signals.
Race Speed/Physical Strengths; Bekhar are extremely fast swimmers in open water, able to catch even the fastest of prey. In smaller areas however, how nimble they are depends on the individual. Reef feeders excel at curving their eel-like bodies around reef and rock, while man-hunters prefer to drift above, watching and listening with their acute senses. Though most lack the physical strength to crush their prey, their claws and teeth are able to deliver a nasty bites and scratches, effectively immobilising their target.
Level of Advancement; No magical ability, arcane knowledge and use of tools and surroundings, intelligence lies in strategy and common sense limiting what their race could ever become.
Population Statistics; Thousands of Bekhar would have existed at one time before their dietary shift, this would have split them into groups, eventually consisting of a populace in the high hundreds.
