The streets were completely deserted when Valerian caught sight of The Wayward Mer, a small tavern owned by his personal fence, Pontos. Despite the lateness of the hour, The Wayward Mer shined like a beacon through the dark waters of the lower district of Veallesi. The beacon invited all -- those with no place to go, drunkards, thieves, liars, cheaters, and anyone rejected by society -- and turned down none.

As Valerian approached the tavern, he could hear the steady noise of glasses clanking, patrons talking, and drunken laughter. He gripped the handle of the tavern's door and turned it, pushing the door as soon the latch clicked open. The strong stentch of the tavern assualted his nostrils immediately, completely drowning out his sense of smell. He quickly waded through the door as soon as he could fit through. He was too exposed outside. A few of the tavern's regular patrons looked up from their drinks and games and nodded a greeting at him as he entered before resuming their happenings. He quickly glanced around the tavern, taking note of the patrons, before he swam torwards the bar.

At the bar, Valerian pulled down his hood, certain that he was safe. He removed his satchel from his shoulder, the contents of the bag making noise as he settled it on the table. The mer behind the bar turned around at the sound and smirked. "The usual, I assume?"

"You know me," Valerian replied.

The mer laughed, shaking his head. "One day I'll serve you some... finer alcohol."

"Keep dreaming, babe. Rum is the only thing I'll ever drink," Valerian said.

The mer, Pontos, grabbed a mug from under the bar, and poured in rum from one of the many kegs against the wall. Once the mug was almost overflowing, Pontos turned back towards Valerian, and smirked once more. "I believe you're forgetting my... ah, skills in persuasion," he said, his hand lightly brushing against Valerian's as he handed him the mug of rum.

Valerian raised the mug to his face, taking a drink. He looked at Pontos from over the rim, eyes narrowing playfully. This was a normal aspect of their relationship. They tried to keep their relationship as businesslike as possible in public, but there was always a subtle touch here and there or gaze between them. Their flirtatious behavior bled through their conversation, and if any of the bar's patrons noticed they didn't seem to care.

"So, Val, how did your evening go?" Pontos asked, resting his arms on the bar's counter, leaning torwards the other mer.

"Fairly well. I found that necklace that one family was wanting."

"The Horrells?"

"Yeah, sure, them. I've got some other stuff for you, as well," he slid his satchel towards Pontos, "Found some nice jewelry in there that we should be able to make a decent profit on."

Pontos opened the bag and discretely peered inside, quickly analyzing the contents. "I think decent is a bit of an understatement. I assume you want to keep the book?" He looked back up at Valerian.

"Of course."

"I'll get in contact with the Horrells and have someone bring them the necklace then. The payment for the contract was up front and is already in our account. I imagine everything else you found will sell pretty quickly; I'll let you know when it does."

"Thank you, as always," Valerian said. He glanced around and noticed that none of the tavern's patrons seemed to be paying them any mind. Turning back to Pontos, he leaned in and pressed a chaste kiss against the other mer's lips before quickly withdrawing. It was an unusual display of affection considering that they were in public, but Valerian reasoned that the rum was making him a little more rash in his decisions. Pontos smiled at him.

Valerian finished the rest of his rum, and slid the mug back towards Pontos. "How's the tavern been tonight?" he asked, resuming conversation.

"Pretty mild, actually," Pontos said, grabbing the mug and shoving it under bar, "there have only been a few minor fights tonight. Although, I overheard some talk from one of the patrons that the city guards were pretty engrossed with catching some thief tonight. That wasn't you, was it?"

Valerian scoffed defensively. "Of course not. I think you underestimate my abilities."

"I don't," Pontos sighed, "I... just worry about you sometimes, is all, especially with the recent increase in guard patrols."

"You don't need to worry 'bout me. It's nothing I can't handle," Valerian assured him.

"I'll always worry about you; you mean too much to me. Just promise me you'll try to be safe?"

"Promise."
