There is a very popular legend in Pridd about a young woman that was struck down too early in her life. Upon her death, she could not bear to leave her equally young lover, but she could not stay a part of the mortal world any longer. In the end, the woman was not only stripped from her lover but also lost her chance to enter through the gates of Theede and become part of the immortal land. Trapped between planes, she now wanders aimlessly around the world, leaving trails of flowers and blossoms in her path with each foot step, hoping one will some day reach her lover and let him know she still thinks of him.

Like many other legends in Pridd, there is a bit of truth to this legend, but the story has changed shape many, many times over the years - and the truth is far less beautiful.



Before he was in the Dark Place, Wren was a writer, often clicking away at his ancient and beloved typewriter or scribbling on whatever scraps of paper he could find. Originally, Wren had wanted to be a great author of epic fiction - the kind of novels that send the reader on a mysterious and wonderful adventure and leave them begging for more. In the end, however, Wren's own love of nature combined with his writing talent, and soon he was in publications talking about bird sightings or the discovery of new, rare plants. Long time at the typewriter was replaced with long hours on hikes, following trails and animal tracks. It was while on one of these trips, trying to gather information for a new article, that Wren became hopelessly lost - and was saved by the rather charming Shrike. After a few rather awkward months of clumsy wooing and overbearing compliments, Wren gave in and let Shrike take him on a date: and another, and another, until the two were completely inseparable.

Now Wren had two things to come between his beloved typewriter: his love of nature and Shrike. Luckily for him, those two things often intertwined. Shrike's love of the outdoors matched Wren's completely, and afternoons were spent hand-in-hand, exploring new trails or looking for new birds (or in Shrike's case, new bugs). At night, the click of keys was interrupted by requests looking at the stars, catching fireflies, or soft kisses.

Wren was content - before he was in the Dark Place.

One afternoon, when the sky was a particularly lovely shade of blue and the breeze was blowing just so, Shrike took Wren on a picnic to their favorite spot: a rushing waterfall hidden deep in the mountain forest, a quiet and private area just for the two of them. Had things been different that day, Wren would have gotten quite a surprise when he opened the picnic basket, for among the delicacies that Shrike had packed was a true gem: a silver ring with a shimmering sapphire. However, another sapphire caught Wren's eye instead - the shimmering wings of blue butterflies as they played on the smooth rocks under the tumbling water.

It was not the first time Wren had ventured into those waters, so neither he nor Shrike thought any different of it when Wren stripped off his boots and began to tread after the creatures. Shrike did not think to warn Wren that the rocks might be slippery when he stepped upon them - for he had done so many times before. In the end, Shrike could do nothing but scream out a warning that was far too late when he saw Wren lose his footing and slip on a rock, hitting his head on another.

His lifeless body was covered by blue butterflies, and a life that had been a dream come true was cut too short. Perhaps this is, however, where the tale gets interesting.

It is well-known in Pridd that when you die, the Guide will show up and take you to Theede, where you will cross over to the Immortal Plane. Very rarely - for Delyth tries to do a thorough job with her task - a soul gets left behind and is forced to wander the Dark Place between the planes until they are found. It is these souls that fuel the legend of the lady with the grove of flowers following her every step while she wanders about this in-between world, trying to send a message to her lost lover.

That lady is actually Wren, and he does wander around the Dark Place, trying to contact his beloved Shrike. No flowers follow his steps, however. No colors, no brightness, nothing but an endless dark road and endless dark walls - and a faint hope that one day, perhaps one day, Shrike will find him.
