In Their Own Words: This is Phillip Pullman's character Mrs. Marisa Coulter, the beautiful and devious biological mother of the protagonist in the epic trilogy His Dark Materials. Though she has black hair in the book, because the movie version - portrayed by Nicole Kidman! - has blond hair, and Pullman himself later stated that he wished he had made the character blond, I chose to make the avatar this way.
The monkey is her daemon - simply called "the golden monkey" in the books; he is named Ozymandias in the radio broadcast. The golden monkey is an extension of not only Mrs. Coulter's beauty, but also her sensuality, her self-serving nature, and her potential for cruelty. The monkey clutches in its foot the Alethiometer, or "Golden Compass," a truth-telling device of pivotal importance to the books.
In the avatar's outfit, I chose to celebrate the glamor and femininity of the character. The aurora background represents the setting of the climax of both the first and the third book - the arctic circle. The ghosts represent the demonic spectres of the second and third books, horrible soul-sucking creatures that nevertheless have enough sentience to refrain from attacking Mrs. Coulter: they recognize her ability to bring them prey.
