In Their Own Words: Gandalf the Grey appears in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. Although he appears as a simple old man in ragged clothes, Gandalf is the wisest of the wizards sent to guide Middle-Earth against Sauron and the forces of evil that would otherwise overtake it.

In Their Own Words: Wandering through the exhibits, he arrived at the one for his most beloved character, the one who ought have been brave but was instead afraid. Knowing what that felt like, he glanced in the mirror that reflected his image. Though he wasn't a perfect look-alike to the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, he knew that their stories were aligned and that his costume wasn't too bad for his homemade attempt. So with the confidence he had never known was lurking within, he went back out to the stage to compete, determined to prevent his fear from dictating his choices.
