Attention Internet Explorer Users! There is a serious flaw in all modern versions of Internet Explorer, which opens up the chance of your personal information being stolen.

This is not an error with Subeta, or any website. This is a problem with the programming itself that allows malicious code to take advantage of your computer, and install malicious software, that could steal the information that you use for your banking, paypal, or other highly personal information.

You can find information about this here, here and here is a link to google news, with Internet Explorer as the keyword so you can get up to date news on the bug itself.

Also, I want to tell you that having a firewall does not prevent this from affecting you. Most virus scanners (unless this is used to maliciously place a known keylogger on your system) will not be able to help you in this situation. The best way to fix this problem is to get rid of the software that is causing it.

Now, I'm not asking you to switch to another browser. I highly advise that you move to another browser, not only because this is a very critical problem, but because the other browsers are just better. They use less memory, they are less bloated, and most importantly, if there is a critical flaw, the other major browsers are very quick to issue a patch and correct the problem. We are not being paid by either the Mozilla Foundation, or the Safari Team (or Opera, or flock to ask you to switch browsers. I simply care about you, our users, and don't want to see your private information stolen, or used against you.

The browser I suggest looking into are Firefox or Safari.

Doing a little research on all the major browsers is probably in your best interest.

Aww, man! I use IE all the time, simply because I don't like Firefox's...layout...and don't know how to change it. I've got Vista Service Pack 1, but when I try to install the update, it says it's not for the right version... Is this included in those Automatic Updates? I'm not tech savvy at all, so I wouldn't know. For now, I suppose I'll just use Firefox.

Got that from the Beeb (BBC), seems like its not just IE =/</blockquote> is right. REALLY right. I've had problems with almost every major browser except Chrome... but that's only because I haven't used it much. There's still time to find a bug.

zub0n...... Please, please... for the sake of Microsoft (and I dislike them, mind you), DON'T use Windows ME as an example. There's a reason that operating system was replaced and disappeared so quickly. Microsoft KNEW they messed up big time and buried. We had ME on one of our machines at home and it was TERRIBLE. Needless to say, we replaced it as soon as we could afford to buy a new OS.

'if it was more secure it wouldn't wooorrrrkkk' with regards to IE is nonsense. I'm reminded of the snafu with the poor Sony rep fellow who really did believe that his company had DESIGNED PS3s to shutdown intermittently; it didn't. The machines would periodically go 'o hell no *bonk*' to save their circuits because they'd overheat. So while the shutdown may have been partially intentional, it certainly wasn't a 'feature' as they tried to spin it. it would have been better to tweak the innards of the machine so as to prevent overheatage, but Sony, like Microsoft, was more interested in releasing their product OMGASFASTASPOSSIBLE than getting it really right.

Anyone who claims Windows is reely reely stabel omg and I'm just dumb should harken to the take of my fiancé's PC. It ran Windows ME and in spite of his regularly maintaining it and my nerdily finessing at it, it ATE ITS OWN BUTT. The program DEVOURED ITS OWN BRAIN, and the computer became UNUSABLE. It was really terrifying to watch. Like - imagine watching your pet hamster turn into a Metroid. it was like that. And the repair shop guys said, "it's dead, Jim; thos OS is evil and rude and all you can do is transfer your significant data to a new machine." They couldn't do anything for it, and they tried. But it was dead. Moral of the stupidstory: Windows ME is dumb as hell, and sometimes Microsoft gets too ahead of themselves and releases thengs WAY sooner than it should, thus resulting in securityfail.

Why IE must attach its butt to your HD is anyone's guess...

*babble* thx u Keef. I'll let the parental units now about this.

Up until recently, there were four major browsers to choose from... IE, FireFox, Safari, and Opera. IE and FireFox are the most popular browsers on PCs, Macs generally use Safari, and Opera is very popular for mobile devices. Because of Googles notability as a search engine plus (with all their various applications), their new browser Chrome (which is still Beta, mind you) rocketed up there fairly quickly to even gain an icon on W3 Schools as far as "This tag is supported by these browsers".

There are five major browsers out there now to choose from... which, frankly, makes it a lot harder for us web programmers because there's a lot out there that's supported by about 3-4 as opposed to all 5... IE usually being the "odd man out" because of Microsoft's propensity to make proprietary stuff and try to get their own share of the money for a particular technology.

Either way, the more popular or more widely used something is, the more of a target for exploits and hackers it becomes. Trust me... the more people start switching over to Macs and FireFox, the more you're going to see attempts to get around their security features. I'm not saying jump on the new technology bandwagon the first time it comes to town... wait until it's been around a while and is relatively stable... but honestly? It's only a matter of time. It's happened, too... there have been serious exploits in open source technologies like FireFox in the past. Granted, they happen less often, but they do happen.

Nothing on the internet is failsafe. Where there's a will, there's a way. If a hacker sees enough of a market and a profit (or enough bragging rights, depending on the hacker) in attacking something, they will. It's that simple.

So, instead of whining about which browser's better, it's always best to have more than one. Sometimes, when something's broken in one browser, it just might work in another. I've had that happen here on Subeta. Just be patient, use another browser for a while if you're concerned, and go back to IE later when it's fixed.

If you're not worried... *shrugs* Then keep using IE. No one's forcing you to switch or bashing you for using it.

Exactly. I dunno why IE or PC users have to get so defensive over this matter. I'm a PC user and prefer it right now because most people I work with have that system. Yes, IE will patch up the bug but people are missing the absolute POINT of the announcement.

Keith and Alyx (sp?) are only trying to be informative and considerate. If someone feels like the message was to bash IE users, that's totally your own interpretation.

He wrote very clearly that he's not telling people to switch, rather he's giving his opinon. And it's not like Keith or Alyx are these hacks. They work a lot more internally here with Subeta, so I feel if they're giving out free advice, it's not to be snooty or arrogant.

It's just a notice to bring awareness and give people options. I dunno why, again, a handful of people take this post as if it's a personal attack, which is completely sad.

I guess I've said my peace on this matter, but just calling out all the potential bs and drama this topic might create by a few misguided/hurt feelings.

I should probably worry about this more than I should. But the only computer I'm ever on that has IE is at work. And while I do access things like google and Subeta there, (here rather since I'm a sitting duck waiting for Satan to return. Yay work. -.-) I don't even really know if I'd take the precautions now. One of them MAY be interested in ruining my google or Subeta (bastards) but I doubt it. And when I'm on the computer, my boss isn't, so he's not running around on his bank accounts. I think I'll just wait for the download tomorrow, simply download it and tell him nothing of it. He's the type that bitches about everything and I really don't want to explain to him WHY he needs to change browsers.

What I don't get is where you get off saying, "The best way to fix this problem is to get rid of the software that is causing it." You do know that we can't get rid of IE for <strong>ANY REASON</strong>... right? Us poor schmoes that are stuck using any of Microsoft's operating systems, needs IE to <strong>FUNCTION</strong>! You can't just simply delete IE. Microsoft made damn sure of that. How can you expect or even suggest to "just delete it"? We're stuck. D=

Every comp expert will tell you the same thing:

All is not lost however. The techies at IE are working on the problem and we'll just have to sit tight and wait for the flipping update! That's all we can do! We can avoid using IE in the mean time but we <strong>can not get rid of it.</strong>

The security breach allows hackers to gain access to PCs by directing people to infected websites.

As a side note, good lord. SO much FUD down below. Ow. Honestly, odduckoasis - Do you believe everything your "It husband" says ? I'm trying very hard to not be snarky, and admittedly I don't run IT/networking professionally, I'm just a happy end user, but, really. my pc is secure 'and' I can play cd/dvd's, use usb things, surf the net and basically do anything because of 'not' running Windows/IE and having security and stability. I have had sidux installed for nearly 2 years now, Kanotix previously, and I have never once had a problem due to attacks, cracks, or other outside malicious intent.

(And if he tells you the strippers on his lap are accountants, it must be true.)

Using an entirely new o/s isn't for everyone, but when repeatedly presented with glaringly obvious flaws in the one you choose to use, if a change is not something you want to do, then take the steps provided to protect yourself the best you can.

Thanks for posting this article.

I switched browsers a couple of years ago from IE to FF and haven't regretted it for a minute. I did try Chrome for a few days but I think it's still or was still in its Beta stage and was useless. It was very buggy at the time but it has potential to become a good browser once they iron out the bumps. Anyway, as someone mentioned, try and keep away from sites that are known for pop ups and what have yous, but also have a pop up blocker installed. Sometimes it's hard to know what sites are bad if you've never been to them before. Anywho thanks for the warning Keith.

Everyone has their preference, and while some people may have "authority" figures or gurus that say IE is not as bad as it seems, etc. The fact is as a web developer for several years, I know from experience that any other browser than IE is much more convenient and stable...not to mention a little less pain in the ass.

One of the things people don't know is that in a PC, IE is connected to your hard drive which is why when you get attacked, you get it bad. Whereas other browsers are applications add-ons. I wouldn't suggest deleting IE from your PC, rather just simply avoid using it.

And yes, every browser is vulnerable to trojans and spyware, that's a given. However, you gotta ask yourself, "If I get a trojan would I rather have it from IE or an alternate browser?" Let me say, I'd prefer the later.

Safari and Firefox are great options. I'm not sure about Chrome (Google has enough out there: mail, search engine, etc. I don't know about a browser, lol.)

All in all, I know people will have their pros and cons about certain browser. Yet when it comes down to it, turning a blind eye to the severe flaws in IE is reckless. So, again, kudos to Keith for letting us know about the latest bug.

My husband is an IT specialist and has worked with Microsoft and other companies and knows quite a bit about the operating system. Yes, it has some issues- but it's far more secure than you might think. One thing I would caution, is that by removing IE from your computer is for one impossible, but if you were able to do it, it will ruin your entire windows system, because they're linked. FF, Safari and all those others, are independent of the OS so that's why it's easy to say they're 'safe'. However, most of these other browsers offer very little security, so you must invest in other spyware and firewalls to protect your computer.
Also, if you are browsing the internet and are going to sites that are prone to download spyware and trojans onto your computer before you have a chance to stop it, then it won't matter what sort of browser you have. The key is to stay away from sites that are problematic.
Another little fact, that has been seen- if MS were as secure as you want it to be, it would be impossible to do anything with and would be useless- because there would be no CD, DVD, USB, ect- no extra's because it's 'secure'. Would you rather be able to enjoy your computer and do what you can to protect it? Or just get all freaked out and complain about an OS that you don't really understand.

Just my two cents. You can proceed to yell at me now. I won't reply.

Have a nice day! Merry Christmas! =D

They wanna use Linux, that's cool, but they don't need to act like its a religion and try to get me to their church on Sunday.</blockquote>

I think that it's completely different. If I were to try to 'sell' you into using a unix based distro versus a MS based OS it's because it'd be
A: Saving you money
B: A lot more secure
C: You'd be able to downgrade hardware, or not purchase as many upgrades, as the OS uses far less resources

etc, etc.

I think me saying that Unix is better than Windows is completely valid in almost every point. The only thing that windows has over any other OS is that it's high in market share, do to it being bundled with all PCs when they're first purchased.

That's untrue to the core. While linux is very powerful, every day it is easier to use. For example, Ubuntu has made HUGE strides, and is very very easy to use. You can use it without ever touching the terminal (I don't know anyone who'd use linux WITHOTU thouching the terminal, though)

Also, keep in mind that Apple's OS X (Which is easily the most user friendly operating system) is based on FreeBSD which is unix <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

Thanks Keith <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_grin.gif" border="0" /> I don't use IE anyway, it's pretty crappy.
I'm pretty sure you cannot delete IE; you can get rid of seeing it but it's files will still be somewhere in Windows because it uses this to update. My roommate is the head supervisor of IT (students) at our college and he told me that, anyway

FF and other broswers slow down my computer more than IE and I don't have anything personal on the computer. It's not safe in general to have any important information such as banking on the internet no matter the type of browser you use it can still one way or another be hacked no matter how fast people are fixing it. It's just weather if you find you have large amounts of important stuff you should use it. I won't get worked up over this but if you do banking ect. I would say you should most likely get off your butt and go to a bank or change a browser. ( Plus FF can't download anything on my computer anyway ) and yes I do know theres 5 other choices.

I don't even HAVE IE on my Mac, so I'm safe. 8D

Thank you for your concern about us, Keith.

Ho-hum. I use FF at home... have done for about 2 years, and so does my daughter on her computer, and my parents who I advised to switch. However, at work, I have no choice, since IE is the browser that is installed, and I am unable to download anything onto their servers. Bleh. Guess this means I can't do my banking or anything at work anymore!

Hahaha suckers {<
This is what you get for endorsing a P.O.S. browser.
FF runs way better in practically every way. Not your cup of tea? There's Crome, safari, and Opera that work better than IE.
I can't see aaaaaany one wanting to stay with IE.
Its the easiest to implant viruses on anyways.
0

MissXami

MorriganDraven, it's better to be safe than sorry. AVG MIGHT pick it up, but it's MUCH better security to just use another browser. Some people may not have the ram to handle AVG (It can be a ram hog when it scans)

This was just what mom needed for her to switch to FF. I'd been wanting her to for awhile now but she needed a good hint to change. She loves it now.

This is a shame due to the fact a lot of companies use IE as a browser because it is one less bit of software to purchase and get a license for. Microsoft should really crack down on the security on their services once and for all since most people may never consider a browser change if they just use the web casually.

Thank you Keith...major (((hugs))) it is just sad that BBC had to break the news before the US news stations would. Sadder yet, but thanks, that I had to hear the news here...on Subeta...before it was on my news homepage. NOW it is plastered all over the news and they, microsoft, MIGHT have a patch for it tomorrow. Once again you have proven how much you care about us <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" />

I would get one of them... but my computer would probably crash. It can't fit much more on it... I have tried the other browsers but again, they just commit complete murder on my computer. It's sad really. Thanks anyway... Maybe I'll try another one sometime... Maybe when it won't destroy mee =]

I'm not deleting IE for something I don't see as a threat to me.
0

Blir

I used to whine all the time about how Firefox was irritating or didn't work; but since there was the wardrobe glitch with IE, I switched. It sounds cheesy- but it was probably one of the best decisions ever. Subeta works SO much better. Same with basically other website.

It's less bulky, and definitely safter than IE or any other browser I've used. It takes a bit of getting used to, but grin & bear it for a little while, and you won't regret it.
0

Zel

@MorriganDraven:

From the post you're commenting on:
Most virus scanners (unless this is used to maliciously place a known keylogger on your system) will not be able to help you in this situation. The best way to fix this problem is to get rid of the software that is causing it.
0

MorriganDraven

@Denzel

I found out why it's not messing up. I have AVG 8.0.

To those who can't switch browsers - I hightly advise you get it. It's free.

That doesn't mean it won't. I seriously suggest, for your computer's safety, that you switch to a different browser.

While you're changing your browser, why not change your o/s to something a bit more secure as well <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_wink.gif" border="0" />

Open source fangirl. Why anyone would use MS anything is beyond me. This isn't the first security flaw, nor will it be the last. This is just the most recent, and covering a larger area at one time.

If you absolutely MUST use windows/IE, look into using it in a virtual environment, box it up. makes it a bit better. a 'bit'
0

Thank you for this! I was wondering what these stupid popups were from. x.x -deleted IE- I don't use it, but argh. x.x

TheLoneTiel

I'm a little miffed that this is causing such a stir today, but has been known for over a week and a patch is expected tomorrow. *shrug* Seems like a lot of worry over something that'll be fixed pretty soon.

But, uh. It is very rude and ignorant to say that someone's preferences for a browser are "stupid". I've never been fond of IE but I know people I respect greatly who use the program, and I know their decisions are not based on ignorance or a lack of IQ. It is often better to keep inconsiderate comments to yourself or at least phrase them in less obviously insulting ways.
0

Raene

I'm primarily a Firefox user, but still used IE for a few things that wouldn't work for me in FF. A few days ago, I acquired Google's Chrome and have been using that in lieu of IE for those things. Even without the threat, why would any intelligent person use IE? Seriously...it does not compare to FF and probably the others Keith mentioned. IE uses caching so when playing a game online you may get an outdated page and not an accurate real time view of your game. Example: items that you thought you had appear to not be there.

You aren't in any danger if IE is on your computer and you're not using it. <img src="http://images.subeta.net/smilies/6398_emoticon_smile.gif" border="0" /> It's just browsing sites on it that puts you at risk--you don't necessarily need to uninstall.

People who simply won't change to a better browser for stupid reasons.

IE is a piece o' crap program. The FREE browsers out there, Safari, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc, are superior in every way. I've been using Firefox for about four years, and I've NEVER had a problem with it, and it comes with plenty of benefits.
