Kayden Xeur

Long ago, when the titans, Arun and Shara fell asleep
They dreamed our world into existence.

She didn't have many memories involving her father. When the Island of Dawn had first been discovered, her father had been one of the explorers chosen to study the new mysterious floating island that had appeared between the continents of Arun and Shara. She vaguely remembered a large hand ruffling her hair and a strong silhouette kissing her mother good bye before exiting their house.

That was the last they ever saw of her father.

She had only been barely close to 7 winters when her father had left to explore the new Island and never returned. Her mother grieved, but stayed strong for her daughter and taught her the way of the sword and bow. But even though her mother hid her troubles from her daughter's eyes, the people's whispers caught her ear. For how could the little girl miss the hateful glares and the spiteful hisses that accompanied and dogged her every step? How could she miss the way her mother's eyes would harden and her rigid posture, as if she were walking to her own execution every time she left the house?

She did not understand why the village children would yank her hair, why they threw rocks at her and jeered, yelling out 'murderer' or 'demon' as they spat in her face. It wasn't until she ran to her mother, sobbing and bruised that her mother rubbed her back and told her why the children she had once called friends were so angry.

Her father was a traitor.

He had lead a small group of explorers into the deeper parts of the Island, many of which were his friends from the village. But something strange had happened to him, for he had suddenly drawn his blade and swiftly felled many of his companions before they could recover from their shock. When the survivors finally shook themselves from their stupor, her father had fled and the Argons had attacked in his wake.

She could not believe that the man she and her mother had loved so much would turn out to be a traitor, but the proof was in the hatred of the village. So for the first time after hearing the news of her father's disappearance, the small child curled into her mother's embrace and wept.

LINE BREAKKKKK

“Hmmm”, The recruiter narrowed his eyes at the parchment while scratching his beard. By the titans, this penmanship was miniscule! “Name?” He finally asked as he looked at the recruit before him with a stern gaze. She nervously shuffled her yew bow that hung on her shoulder before meeting the man's eyes.

“Coryn.” She responded, her eyebrows furrowing as she determinedly tried to appear intimidating. The recruiter laughed, his eyes sparkling with mirth before he placed the parchment down and picked up a stamp.

“We don't see many Castanics in Velika, let alone any archers.” He said gruffly as he slammed the stamp down, leaving behind a blotchy red mark that signified the human fortress of Velika. “Most of you horned bastards meander off to Kaiator and wield them pointy little toothpicks that you lot call swords.” He smiled again as he handed the sheet back to her.

Coryn huffed, but refused to show that his words had any effect on her. It was true, many of her kind would much rather join the fight against the Argons by swearing allegiance to Kaiator, but Velika was the closest to her home in the village of Crescentia. She saw no reason to respond to the man's callous remarks and stayed silent as he lazily gestured to a side room where all of the recruits had gathered. She sighed as she repositioned her bow and pack before following the other recruits, all of them holding a similar parchment with the same seal stamped on them. The Castanic ran a hand through her short hair, wincing as she felt the slick strands.

First on the list, a bath.
