Fauxer's Story

FAUXER (Foe-er)A nomad by nature, Fauxer flits between our reality, and several much like it, playing tricks and giving misleading (though generally helpful) advice to those who seek him out. It is said that if you gather candles and light them in a specific sequence he will be drawn to it, a beacon of curiosity. You may then ask him any single question--not through any sort of cosmic rule, but it is more likely that he will be increasingly scatterbrained with any kind of follow up. Below is an accounting of such an encounter...

"It was late that night, when I came upon a page that detailed a meeting with the mythical creature, Fauxer. I felt drawn to the information, and felt as if it spoke to me. It was only hours later, as the sun peaked through my blinded windows, and my roommate sleepily called into my room, that I realized I had lost much of the night to his story. Over breakfast I shared my interest, my enthusiasm, of the story, and though he assured me it was a fascinating story, it was nothing more. Just a silly bit of nonsense for children to entertain themselves at slumber parties and the like.

Later that night I again fell prey to the tales that wove through the internet, detailing their encounters with the being. Slipping behind a forum name, I probed within each page, and was continuously encouraged to try the summoning on my own. I felt invigorated, and gathered as many candles I could. Hastily I arranged them, my hands trembling in excitement. Sweaty, slick fingers slipped on the lighter as my heart pounded in my ears. I lit the final candle, and...silence. As if a vacuum had surrounded the room, the very breath was stolen from my chest. Far from the glow of the candles, blinked a single emerald eye from the nothingness, and a soundless voice whispered in my ear; "Such nice candles you have there..." He seemed to purr, "I love when there's nice candles. And they burn so much brighter here, not like those others.." The eye blinked and it was suddenly upside down, pearly white teeth pointing out above them.

Frightened, I took a moment to catch my breath, and almost spoke without thinking. If the stories were true, an almost undoubted thought at this junction, he would only answer the first. Should I ask my future? How to make millions? The meaning of life? Questions flew through my mind, while the corner of my eye caught him moving again, righting himself in the darkness. My question escaped me then, childish and impatient, asking "How do you move like that?" It was quiet, a whisper, yet still he heard. Again his voice was in my ear, "I move at my own will, through a series of motions that are as natural to me, as walking is to your kind; I am not particular friends with what your people call physics." He chuckles even as the eye rights itself, bright with amusement.

Angry, I raised my voice. "That's not fair, that shouldn't count!" My voice cracked, though if he heard my outburst, Fauxer showed no sign of such. "Candles are much nicer when they're not upside down," He commented, "Though I cannot say the same about pincushions." Determined not to let the night go to waste, I hastily grabbed my camera. There had been some warning The bright light of the flash drowned the room, and illuminated the beast's body--a single piercing eye in the middle of his forehead, framed by flowing fur and energy. Those teeth, the ones that had punctuated the darkness, parted and revealed a deep and black void, from whence a loud and deep-toned roar emanated. In that flash of a moment I had seen more than I had ever cared, relieved when the darkness returned to the room. (TBE)
