The locals tell stories of an otherworldly creature that moves with the land. They speak it's chosen name in only a whisper; Vurmir. It appears to sprout up from burrows and take to the sky for brief periods of time before returning to the earth from where it came. As it leaves, the earth seems to swallow it whole, leaving only a path behind for those who know how to find it. Each account shares different recollections of it's true appearance. No one is quite sure of it's intent, but have noticed that it seems oblivious to the world around it. It seems to only care for what ever desire drives it.
The most common sightings of this creature are at night. It's serpentine like scales reflect opalescent flashes of moonlight at anyone who might happen to cast their gaze at the sky at an opportune time. Many explain that at first glance they thought this was mere starlight. The subtle shifting colors however, caught their attention and drifted and glistened unlike any stars they'd seen before.
One such report explained that unfortunate souls may see more than just the tiny lights flickering in the sky. They told that they witnessed another villager who claimed to have seen one of these scales shed off and fall into the forest nearby. Compelled to seek this treasure, the villager fled swiftly into the trees, only to return the next morning exhausted and battered by whipping branches.
Others confirmed seeing many a villager return in such the same state, tired and confused. They were somehow changed from the person they once were. Some returned silently and never spoke another word, and others became increasingly aggressive, sometimes even violent. All accounts of those who returned ended with the afflicted fleeing suspiciously at night, never to be seen again.
Many have tried to seek the resting place of this creature, but none have claimed to have found it. They believe that it never truly settles, but is constantly moving somewhere just below the lives that seek to find it. Some say if you happen to have your ear to the ground at just the right moment, you can hear the scratching of it's claws against the stone and dirt as it travels.
When word spreads among town that this creature has been spotted, many are fearful. Others adorn themselves with packs and gather their wheelbarrows to seek out where the earth has been upturned. They say that the soil that has been touched when the creature dives back down becomes blessed. You simply need to walk into the forest deep enough, and you'll begin to see the skittering of insects that fled the creature's path leading a trail to your destination. This blessed dirt keeps the town fed in troves, and none are willing to complain of it's bounty.
Villagers seem divided on whether Vurmir's presence is a blessing or a curse. The only thing they seem to agree on is keeping hope for all those who have been lost to be returned. Only time will tell the tale.
