STORY

As the old man lay in his hospital bed, his family around him, he suddenly became aware of a presence in the room. He saw Tempus sitting in the chair in the corner. "Who are you?", the old man asked. His family looked round, bemused, as they could see no-one there. They then looked at each other as if to say "he's delirious, not making sense".

Tempus stood up and moved to the end of the old mans bed. The man watched him, and then Tempus spoke. "It's time". The man, puzzled, asked "Time for what?" Tempus replied, "Time for you to leave". With that, Tempus left the room as silently as he had arrived, and made his way down the hospital corridor. As he walked, he passed Thanatos, with his hooded robe and scythe. Their eyes made contact, but no words were spoken - they never were, in all the times they had passed each other.

Tempus left the hospital and headed straight for the park. He needed to see the trees, the grass, the flowers - they reminded him of life, the very thing he took away - and he often sought solace in the tranquility of nature.

Visiting the little girl was going to be tough. It was always hard with the young ones. Tempus made his way upstairs to her bedroom, and was a little relieved to see she was sleeping. He sat on the edge of her bed for a while, watching her breathing. Her head was bald, she was painfully thin. He knew it would be time, soon. His thoughts wandered to the park, to the scent of the flowers, the beauty of nature. Gently, he shook her shoulder. She stirred, and turned to look at him, blurry-eyed. He smiled. "It's time", he said softly. Before she could speak, he got up and left the room. If he had stayed a few moments longer, he would have heard the little girl whisper "thank you, I'm ready". Thanatos was already on his way up the stairs. Tempus closed the front door quietly, and took a few moments to take in a deep breath of fresh air.

As he walked the streets, he stopped and waited by the roadside. The car would appear any moment. The crash would be fatal. His services would be needed again. After a few moments, the car careered into the wall, just a few feet away from Tempus. He made his way towards to the mangled wreckage. Leaning over to get closer to the woman behind the wheel of the car, he placed his hand on her forehead and whispered, "It's time."

Passing Thanatos in the street, Tempus headed for the park. He sat there for some time, un-noticed by others. He wished for a different existence. However, he knew this could not be. He was duty-bound to help the mortals pass on to the other side. In allegiance with Thanatos, his existence could be no other. His appearance at a designated time would summon Thanatos - it was as inevitable as the sun setting and rising each day, the moon waxing and waning, the tide ebbing and flowing. After all, Time waits for no man.
