STORY

The elders gathered the children around the fire, there was great excitement among them. It was the eve of their biggest festival, and it entailed much singing, eating and storytelling. The children waited patiently for the elders to begin. They wanted to hear the story of their hero, Kai and their Protector, Hale.

Salek was the chief elder, and spoke to the children. 'This is the story of Kai, the saviour of our village. Many years ago, on a night just like this, the Oracle delivered a message to the elders. The village was suffering, the crops were failing and the rains would not come. There was sickness and death among the villagers, and everyone was afraid.

The Oracle told the elders that a brave man was needed to fulfill the wish of the Gods. If he did as they asked, the village would be saved. The Protector, Hale, would forever keep watch over the village, and bring fortune and health to us all. Kai was the man who went on the mission - to find the lost 7th gold ring, and return it to Hale. It would be a difficult and dangerous journey, but there was no-one who doubted Kai would do everything he could to find the ring.

Kai set off at first light, with maps, supplies, and the blessing of the Elders. He would be gone for many months. During that time, he met many mythical beings, and wise sages, who helped him along his way. Eventually Kai was led to a swamp, where a beast with 2 heads dwelled. It was this beast that was said to have stolen the gold ring - and Kai had to fight him to win it back. The battle was arduous and Kai was severely injured. He finally slayed the beast, and searched in his lair to find the ring. After a time, he found it, tucked away in a box behind the beasts' throne. Kai began his long journey home.

It was on this very night that Kai the hero returned to the village. He was sick and injured, and had crawled the last part of the journey - and gave up his life in front of the Elders. They retrieved the ring from the bag Kai was carrying, and asked the Oracle to tell Hale The Protector the lost ring was found. A short while later, the beating of wings was heard, and in the distance they saw Hale soaring over our village. He swooped down and landed on this very spot - and the Chief Elder placed the lost gold ring on The Protector. The ring immediately began to glow. And from that day forward, Hale has watched over us.

Kai was buried by the Elders, with the entire village in attendance. A shrine was built in his honour, which still stands today. To begin the Festival, we will honour Kai by singing the song written for him after his passing. We will give thanks to The Protector and enjoy the Festival, singing our songs and offering food - and remember our fallen hero, Kai. By the mystical power of the Gods, Hale brings us the rains, and ensures our crops grow - and brings us the sun, and plentiful harvests. Hale brings us good health, and prosperity!
