Arukarie
(ah-roo-kah-ree)
Once upon a time, there was a planet of strange peoples completely alien to us. This alien race, like us, had a variety of different cultures and beliefs. But one thing they had in common was that they sought the protection and blessing of a powerful guardian dragon. While her name differed and her portrayal was slightly different from country to country, all agreed that her scales were as beautiful and wondrous as the night sky and that she wielded awesome power; power to heal sickness, power to smite the wicked, power to rain down her fury if displeased. In their stories, she was often a wise and cunning trickster, taking the form of one of their kind to help the weak and teach the unfaithful to bow to her will.

But Arukarie, dragon-god, was not the only being. Alternate religions sprang up, calling the name of another deity, like herself, only born of the soil and the earth. This new god was referred to herself as Kisura, and wherever she went, plants and crops grew in abundance. Little Kisura, child-god, wished no rivalry on Arukarie, whom she saw as an older sister. Arukarie was torn between Kisura's admiration and devotion and the fact that the new god was taking away her followers. A god's power is only as strong as the faith and prayer of her followers, and the fewer followers she had believing in her, the less power she had. Nevertheless, she hid her envy and worries deep in her being, and (figuratively) took Kisura under her wing.

The followers of both religions, however, did not follow the gods' footsteps. Both of them were competing for resources in the same countries and preached their gospel as the one truth. Eventually, such behavior turned violent, and wars broke out, bringing death and destruction upon the world. This divided the two gods; Arukarie's frustration at her weakening power came forth and consumed her, and Kisura's efforts to both calm the followers and her older "sister" were useless. They both grew so angry at each other that they decided to intervene and save their followers from the other side. Arukarie unleashed fire from the sky, torching the cities and temples of Kisura. Kisura herself found that she could not only give life to plants, but take life away, and she caused the deaths of many of the crops of Arukarie's followers, causing famine and starvation. Finally, when that wasn't enough, the two of them decided to fight each other directly. The skies blazed, and the end of the world came, despite the prayers from both sides for salvation.

The two gods greatly wounded each other and fell in the ruins of the civilizations that gave them power. For hundreds of years, they rested (as gods can never be truly killed in the mortal sense). When they awakened, their bodies whole again, they found that there was no people to be found. Not even a child stirred upon the deserted ruins of the world, and the ground was as black glass, infertile, doomed to forever be barren. The two sisters turned to each other for solace as they realized that they caused all of this, and thus the elimination of their power and those who loved them. Both of them tearfully left the broken world together, for some other destination in a universe that hardly had any life in it.

The pair came across Subeta by complete accident. While Kisura recovered somewhat from her despair, Arukarie became cynical and nihilistic. The two of them thus parted ways at Subeta, for they disagreed on just what they should do there. Kisura retreated to the forests of the world, trying in vain to exercise her growing powers and find some way to cheer her older sister up, while Arukarie went to the caverns of the moon to do nothing but read in an effort to forget everything.

Today, she still resides there, doing nothing but reading about the stars. Those who come to her for advice, as she somehow gained a reputation for being wise and worldly, would have a biting and/or snarky remark (though being the piece of advice they were looking for) directed at them before she would go back to reading. It seems that the cosmic minions of Subeta know what she is, because they all flock to her, much to her annoyance until she realized that she could make them do things for her, like get more books to be devoured by her mind.
