It is a truth universally acknowledged that mice aren't the most popular animal species around, but that did not bother Mice, the protagonist of the story I am about to tell you.

in the begining

His birth took place in one of the many chambers of the burrow his extended family inhabits. Pregnancies, births and deaths are so common in their species such that no one was particularly happy (or sad) at the arrival of new family members.

He was the 9th child in the litter of 11. Though Mice probably has had tens of siblings above him, his mother never kept count on the litters she gave birth to so we shall pretend that he is the 9th child. Of course, we are probably the only ones who actually cared about numbers as Mice was busy competing for milk at that time. Limited stock and space, first come, first serve.

He was the sixth newborn to open his eyes, and that kind of describes the kind of mouse he is - average.
So that is Mice. A average, ordinary, normal mouse.

Like the rest of his family, Mice is called Mice.
(don't ask me why they aren't called mouse, ask the mice!)
Names did not matter as individuals are differentiated by scent. According to his mother, our Mice has a stronger milk scent compared to his siblings, for instance.

growing up

As Mice grew up, he tried again and again to make friends and befriend other mice in his family, but it never worked out. Not because other mice weren't friendly, but rather because he soon realised that the life of a mouse is not a safe one. They say that "mice come and mice go", and it is very true.
Every day mice are born, and every day mice left the burrow to find food, but some never returned.
Here today, gone tomorrow. The story of a mouse.

You know you are a grown up mouse when you are used to goodbyes. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the transformation happened really quick.

Remember how we mentioned that mice aren't the most popular species around? Hence, when the family's burrow was discovered by the humans who owned the land, it didn't take long for the men to show them who was boss. Boiling oil were poured from the openings of the burrow, sealing the fate of every clan member that the liquid met.
Mice was one of the very few that survived.

and so...

Our lucky protagonist returned late that night, and came back just in time to witness the tragedy that befell his clan.At the sight of the event, Mice escaped into a nearly wood in search of a shelter. And that was the last anyone knew of him.
