. the spectral doll .

Once upon a time, there was a young girl who had it all. A wealthy upbringing, high social status thanks to her family, and all the things in the world she could want... Except fun, that is. Her days were boring, plagued with the same mundane violin lessons and tea time at too-long rosewood tables. One night, however, her outlook changed.

She found herself in her family's parlor, when a sound startled her. Footsteps. Soon the girl found herself face to face with a man she had never seen before, dressed in all black with scars on his face. "Who are you?" she questioned, blinking golden eyes at the man. He seemed to pause to contemplate something, looking around, before kneeling down to answer her at eye-level.

"I am... a figment of your imagination," he tried, but the girl simply narrowed her eyes at him, face disbelieving. "...Okay, fine. I'm - an adventuring hero, of sorts. How does a little adventure sound to you, little one?" Her eyes instantly lit up, and he knew he'd struck gold.

"I like adventures," the girl started, clasping her hands together in front of her. "I never get to have any with other people...!"

"Well then... How about you come with me?"

"Oh, yes, I'd love to," the girl cried, although tensed her shoulders at a hush from the man. "Where are we going?" she murmured, walking closer to him.

"To a place that's a lot different than this... What do you say? You may never want to come back here, for it's very fun." Curiously enough, that didn't seem to bother the young girl at all. She eagerly agreed, and the two of them silently escaped the house. It was a short walk to the stables behind the girl's house afterward when she offered the man a horse. The two rode off into the city, but she had quickly succumbed to dreams...

When she next awoke, the girl found herself in a warm bed - stiffer than what she knew, but still relatively comfortable. Looking around, she noted the cobblestone walls and dark wooden floor, and finally saw the man from before sitting at a nearby table.. A lantern was on beside him, and he was busy writing something. She sat up in the bed slowly, hesitating to say anything. ...Were they under a tavern? She could hear music and voices and merrymaking upstairs. "Is this the fun place?" she questioned, finally.

"Aye, that it is, my little lady," the man said without looking up. He seemed busy, so she looked around again. After a moment more, he spoke, and commanded her attention. "This... is a thieves guild. Which you are now the newest member of," he said as he turned to look at her, light hitting his eyes and showing, in spite of his words, mischief, not malice. "And you will now be known as Fantasied, the spectral doll."

"Spectral? You mean, like a ghost?"

The thought was puzzling to her, but he cracked a lopsided smile and clarified: "That's half the meaning, aye. It also refers to the spectrum of colors." Nodding in understanding, the girl shuffled out of bed. This sounded like a fun game! Secret identities and thieves! Would they get jewels? Or gold?

"What should I call you, then?"

The man's lopsided smile turned into more of a grin as he parted his lips before speaking. "Call me King." Oh, how mystified she looked at that!

"King!" she exclaimed. "That's a wonderful name!"

Years went by and slowly the girl had realized this wasn't a game, but a new lifestyle. Many times she had caught glimpses of posters reporting her missing. It was this that caused her to cut her hair herself. King always looked out for her, even after it was clear that he had done nothing short of kidnap her. But she liked him - and saw him as more of a father than the one related to her by blood, so it was quite alright with her.

Thanks to him, she felt alive.
