Jen had recently moved into the appartment with her 6 year old son, Cane. After the divorce from his father, Jen was finally able to find somewhere nice for them to live, near a park, and a good school for Cane.
It was fair to say that Cane was not settling in well. Reports from school were not good, his teachers complained that Cane seemed distracted and tired, and Jen had noticed he had trouble sleeping. He was always complaining about noises and monsters in his room at night.
This particular night, Jen told Cane to get ready for bed, while she prepared lunches for them both for the following day. After finishing up, Jen went to his bedroom, and saw him sitting up in bed. "Do you want a story, kiddo?" she asked him. He very slowly turned his head towards Jen, and said "Yes, Mother". She thought he was acting a little odd, but grabbed a book from the box by the bed and read him a quick story.
After the story was finished, she put the book on the bedside table, told Cane to settle down, kissed him on the forehead and said goodnight. She was almost out of the door when she heard him say "You forgot to check under my bed for monsters". Jen sighed a little, then smiled at him and said "Okay honey, okay."
She slowly got down on the floor, and looked under the bed. Nothing. Jen stood up to find the bed was empty. She looked around, feeling a little bewildered. At that moment, Cane walked in, rubbing his eyes. "I'm ready for bed, Mum" he said. Jen stared at him and said "Where have you been?". Cane answered, "In the bathroom, getting ready for bed like you told me to. Can I have a story now?"
Jen felt the hairs go up on the back of her neck. "I...I..already read you a story, Cane", she replied. Cane shook his head and said "No you didn't Mum". Jen went to point to the book she had just read to him - it wasn't there. Suddenly out the of the corner of her eye, she noticed the closet door, which had been slightly ajar, was now closing on it's own. Jen heard the 'click' as the door shut, and then...a giggle.
Jen grabbed Cane, ran out of the room, got her car keys and purse and never looked back. A few minutes had passed; Jen was trying to be calm, and just drive them somewhere, anywhere safe. Cane spoke quietly to her; "See, I told you Mum - there ARE monsters in my room."
Jen whispered back "I know honey, I know...."
