I didn't know where my parents went, or why. Just that they were gone. No note, no 'goodbye', just... gone.

I left after that. I never wanted to see that city again. If they could disappear, why couldn't I? They made it clear-- I'm not needed. Things would be better this way, right? Me, all warmth, fire dancing behind my murky eyes. And despite my... uniqueness, I'm sickly, prone to illness.

These are the things I thought about while I walked; in the direction towards the mountains I had read about in years past. Back then, I'd been fascinated that a perpetually cold place could even exist. I'd always been told I shouldn't go to such a desolate place, but I didn't care now. I did dress more appropriately. I had a jacket and long, snug pants, but I doubted it would matter seeing as I'm always warm to begin with.

After some time, I finally reached the base of the mountain. I was already completely exhausted, but I pressed on. The wind began to pick up, harsh and bitter, and the snow that started out just below my ankles was steadily rising, eventually reaching a few inches below my knees. I made it about halfway, I guessed, and that's when the snow storm really started. I couldn't see more than a foot in front of me, I couldn't breathe... and that's when it hit me that I was shaking. I didn't feel particularly cold, but I felt so weak, and... scared. Even so, I tried desperately to make my way to a cave I'd spotted just before the storm started, but ended up collapsing before I could.
I blacked out.

When I woke up, I thought I was dreaming. I was in a room... a luxurious one. The bed I was in had a canopy, with beautiful blue and cream colors. I tried to sit up and failed, flumping back down into the soft mattress. I could hear faint voices outside the room. I struggled to focus on them.

'I'm surprised he didn't take her to the mountain city. They weren't far from there, right?'

'No, but he insisted she would do better here. I don't understand it either, but... he's been great to us, great to the kingdom. I won't doubt him now.'

Where was I? I tried once more to get up. I made it farther... by falling off the bed. Before I could try to sit myself up, I heard the door fly open, shortly followed by someone's arms around me, lifting me to my feet. I held onto his shoulder to keep myself stable.
"Are you alright?! You scared me half to death... you can't expect to walk around after being half buried in snow!"
He continued exclaiming at me and asking me if I was okay. I stared at him. He had fair features, long, blond hair, soft blue eyes... and a crown upon his head. I'd barely noticed that he'd stopped speaking.
"...Are you mute?"
"No!!"
He jumped a bit. "Well that's, uh... good, then! I guess you'd like to know where you are, wouldn't you?"
"That would be nice, yes..." I rolled my eyes.

He explained (in short) that I was in the royal palace of the small kingdom of Ledus, how a travelling merchant had rescued me and brought me here... everything.

"This is... a lot to take in. I'm sorry to burden you, Your Highness." I saw his eyes grow wide in surprise.
"Burden?! You're no such thing! Take all the time you need to recover... you can even stay permanently, if you like. In your condition, you shouldn't be travelling much of anywhere..."

I stared in silence again. I was taken aback by his kindness... Even when I was little, my parents seemed to shy away from me, only did what they felt they had to do for me. And they always kept their distance. Here was a man I had known for maybe ten minutes, and he was willing to house me and care for me.

"...Thank you." I muttered quietly. He was still close enough to hear. His only response was a soft smile. He helped me back over to the bed so I could rest more.

"Not that I like interrupting..." the other voice from outside, which I had absolutely forgotten about, now had a face to match. Big, dark blue eyes, with a handsome face to match, and somewhat unruly brown hair.

"...But I'm afraid our dear King Rasmus has other matters he needs to attend to...? Isn't that right?" he smiled. Rasmus groaned.

"...Right, right. Malidus, while I'm handling things, please take care of...? ...Oh!" he slapped a hand to his forehead and sighed.

"Please forgive me," he turned back to me, "I never asked your name. Or told you mine for that matter... although Malidus here just said it. He's the captain of my knights, by the way." he chuckled nervously.

I couldn't help but laugh a little myself. For a king, he seemed a bit... excitable.
"I'm Zeirara, but... call me Zei, please."

After a few more thank-yous and feel-betters, Malidus gently but forcibly shuffled Rasmus out. As I laid back down and started to drift off again, I thought of how nice it would be to really stay here forever...

...If only I'd known then that I would.
