Once upon a time, there was a young Prince, his mother the Queen, and his father the King.
They had a kingdom with great big protective walls. Within those walls was a castle and a village. Everyone who lived there was happy!
Everyone except the Queen. Oh, she loved her husband and son and subjects very much, but she was tired! Tired of living the same days over and over, nothing new and exciting to do... She very well couldn't leave their enclosed little land. It was forbidden by the king. She had no wish to upset him or break the rules, so quiet she stayed about her dreams.

While putting young Rasmus to bed one night, he looked up at her with curious, sleepy eyes. "Mom, may I ask you a strange question?"

"Anything you like, you can ask me."

He smiled. "Why is it that we cannot leave? Outside the walls, I mean. All the crops are either grown in the village or delivered to us by merchants from outside... in fact, near everything we have came from outside, but we're always... well, in. Why?"
His mother looked away from him, seemingly lost in thought. "That is a complicated story, my little prince... you might not understand it very well. But I'll tell it to you anyway, if you like." Rasmus nodded furiously. "Alright. It started many years ago, when all the tribes were one..."

"Before I or your father was born, there was a great king. He ruled with a kind and just heart over all the tribes. He understood the desires of the quiet, agreeable Violes, he enjoyed the company of the feisty, powerful Scarlets, and respected the honorable and beautiful Levias. He was of the Prisms, and his people were intelligent and dignified, though he had no problems conversing with the commoners...
Rasmus interrupted. "What about us, though? What about normal people...?" She chuckled. "You must let me finish! There were not many of us back then."

"As I said, there were hardly any people like us then. I will not explain this all in detail to you, but eventually, after the great king passed away, his son inherited his responsibilities as king. He tried to be as caring and considerate as his father was, but he was scared, and young... very brash. The people were reluctant to serve him, but they did, and they grew to love him."

"However, the Scarlets were becoming restless. They wanted to rebel simply for the sake of rebelling. They were tired of being ruled, and thought themselves superior! 'Why should we all follow under the rule of the Prisms?' they'd say. Soon the other tribes, skeptical as they were about joining the angry blacksmiths, did indeed side with them. There was a war. The king's patience wore thin until there was none left, and using his abilities, diminished all of the tribe's magical capabilities until they were near-useless. He went on to imprison the rebel leader of the Scarlets, Strayer, and gave him immortality, so that he could witness the downfall of his people."

Rasmus' eyes were wide. Never before had he heard of such terrible, scary things. The Queen continued. "As time passed, and generations after generations of children were born, some lost all magical properties and became normal people, such as us. The tribes were separated. And as for us and our kingdom, we have isolated ourselves from the dangers of the outside world as much as possible. That is why we cannot leave, dear Rasmus. I'm sorry... this was a long tale, you must be terribly sleepy."

She looked down at him to find that he was sound asleep. She got up and left, hoping that his dreams wouldn't be filled with the horrors of war and rebellion.

Oh mom, please don't be angry with me for my choices. I can only do the best that I can. The world is changing, we don't need to hide anymore... Someday you'll see!
