Flare was destined to become King of his world, Varentina, after his father's rule ended. He spent much of his youth being taught his responsibilites and duties, and found it thoroughly boring. Any chance he had, he would escape from the palace and go to the local town; just a few alterations to his clothing were all he needed to disguise himself. There he would enjoy mingling with the market traders, who of course had no idea this was their future King. He told them he was a sailor, who travelled different lands, and was always curious what the latest 'trends' were amongst the sellers and buyers.

It was always taken for granted that would Flare would become King, until one day, at the age of 19, he was banished from his world by his father, for disobeying him, and socialising with the 'lowly' townsfolk. His father was very old-fashioned, and somewhat arrogant. He believed the towns people were beneath him, and his kingdom, and certainly not good enough to be talking to his son. Flare had previously been caught in the market, twice, and his father had made it clear it would not be tolerated. Flare was afraid of his father, and did not deliberately want to disobey him, but the bustle of the market, it just seemed so..alive to him. He couldn't resist, and he succeeded in deceiving his father a few more times before being caught again on that fateful Summers day.

His mother begged and pleaded with her husband, but he would not listen. He announced to the kingdom that his son, the Prince, was to be banished to an island, far away from this world. He would never be allowed to return. His mother quietly wept, knowing there was nothing she could do to protect her eldest son. Flare's two younger brothers tried to be brave, but even they couldn't stop a few tears from falling. The very next day, Flare went aboard the ship that would take him to his new home. The sailors were forbidden to talk to him, and it was a very uncomfortable journey, both physically and emotionally. After several days at sea, they arrived at the island. Flare was ordered to leave the ship by the captain. He watched sadly as the ship set sail again, without him. He was alone. He had a trunk with his possessions in - the rest he would have to do without. He would have to learn to find food for himself and provide everything else he would ever need. Coconuts, fish, berries and fruits and any other foods he could find on the island would have to be his diet from now on. At night, he would cook any food he caught on an open bonfire. It was the intolerable silence of his new life that Flare found hardest to bear.

Over the coming years, Flare had become bitter, and increasingly dismayed at his situation. He could not believe he had been left here, abandoned. Flare knew he would always be completely alone, and would be until his dying day. Some days, he would sit on the mountain-side and stare into the sky, his memories taking him back to the world he came from. He wondered if they ever missed him. He thought of his Mother, and how much he missed her, and of his younger brothers. He also thought of his Father, but not in the same way - as the rage would go stronger inside him, he seemed to almost glow - the flames around him brighter than ever. And as his rage subsided, so did the glow.

He knew it was pointless to sit and dream, but he did. He dreamt of many things - his old life, the market, the traders, his family. A life he would never be a part of again. Flare hoped the end would come for him, soon...he had nothing else left to hope for.
