Have you ever wondered how it would feel to run free over meadows through the rain, to chase the thunder as the electricity runs through your veins? To roll in the mud and shake all the stress away? I did and this is my story.

My whole life I have been living among dogs. If my mother would say I was part of a nest, I would believe her. Everything I have, I share with the dogs at home. It never feels like we own them. They are just part of our family and we are part of their pack. Individuals.

As a young girl, I ran among the pack over the hills behind our little cottage in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. I could never catch up with them. I dropped myself between the grass and the heather, watching the clouds and wishing I would ever walk the earth on all fours.

At the age of 11, I received my letter from Hogwarts. I didn’t want to go, but my parents were so proud I was able to be actually educated in magic. They never did much with their powers except nourishing the land. I had never seen a school. Let alone, other witches or wizards. Me and my family found peace in our solitude. Outsiders were not wanted. We never needed someone, since we live off the land.

I was sorted into Ravenclaw. I kept very to myself and could only be friendly to certain people. Every week, my barn owl brought me plucks of fur from the dogs. I missed them immensely. Most nights I went to sleep with a heavy heart. Then, I overheard some third years about becoming an animagus. But I couldn’t wait until my third year. I wanted it now.

The hardest part was holding the mandrake leaf in my mouth from full moon to full moon. Oh, and then there was the sneaking out of the castle. I snuck into the forest for untouched dew. At an open spot covered in moonlight, I spat my mandrake leaf into a phial, added the dew with a silver teaspoon I took with me at dinner, and cut off a strands of hair and added it to the potion together with the chrysalis of a death’s head hawkmoth. I hid it in a hollow tree near the lake.
I recited the animagus spell at dawn and dusk with whole my heart, holding the tip of my wand over my heart. I probably had to wait for three to four months for the first thunderstorm. But there was nothing that could stop me from living towards my dream. It was reckless of a first year to try this, but I just had to. I skipped charms class to run towards the tree with my potion. Some students must have thought I was mad for running outside in this weather, this quick. Like I would never see rain again in my life. I recited the spell one more time and drank the solution.

From then on, I haven’t been outrun yet by the dogs. Since I could be one myself.
