A finger absent-mindedly twirling itself in her platinum blonde hair, Eluria Dufresne used her other hand to flip through the pages of the large tome in front of her. A white candle burned nearby, its bright flame creating dancing smoke trails. She was fairly certain this tome would have - aha! Yes! There it was. A banishing spell for annoying, violent, or troublesome spirits. She set to work, a canister of salt in her free hand.

"I'll just come back later, you know. That's not going to help you." There was a shattering of porcelain as the spirit in question threw a teapot in what Eluria could only think of as a protest. She continued to pour salt into a wide circle around his location.

"Oh, believe me. I know you'll be back. You're always back. Maybe not you in particular, but you... all. Spirits. Ghosts. I've been dealing with you all for a long time now." Finished with her salt circle, she looked on her shelves for the next step's ingredients.

She wasn't wrong, of course. From a young age, she'd seen ghosts and been able to speak with them. Most were kind, and maybe just a little lost, sad or lonely. Others were angrier, more violent. And some ghosts, like this jerk, were just annoying.

~~ :skull: ~~

Eluria Dufresne first realized she could see, and even speak with the dead at the age of four. It started innocently enough. Her mother would visit her frequently, humming a little tune or playing with her young daughter. It never occurred to Eluria that nobody else ever acknowledged the blonde woman’s presence. It wasn’t until Eluria one day asked her father why Mama never stayed for dinner that she realized nobody could see what she saw.

She grew up in a funeral home. Renault Dufresne ran the business on his own. The basement of their house doubled as his workshop, the often-shuttered room where Eluria was forbidden to play was used for viewings. The ghosts of the dead would frequently talk with the young girl, whether or not she wanted them to. There was no way to filter them out.

Perhaps because of her upbringing, Eluria had rather macabre interests for a little girl. She collected the skulls of small animals – birds, rats, and bats, mostly – and it was this collection that attracted the attention of the “dark matter”. Curious little motes of dark energy, they possessed a portion of the growing girl’s collection. Rather than be afraid of them, she would listen to them chatter in their strange language, and eventually befriended them. The name they had chosen for themselves was “Legion”. Her close association with the dark matter over the years would eventually cause her to develop a light fuchsia glow of her own.

By the time she was in her teens, Eluria was sick of her curious ability. She was tired of lurking around the corner whenever he father was hosting a funeral viewing, having to listen to the departed’s spirit complain about what they were dressed in, or commenting on the job he had done on their makeup or how fake some of their family were.

In time, she’d dabble with witchcraft, having resigned to the knowledge that she would always be plagued by the spirits of the deceased. If she was going to be able to talk to the dead, she figured, she might as well be able to do other things as well.

It was on a dark, dreary October evening when the girl was in her early twenties, that she attempted to summon… whatever she could. She had lit the candles, said the incantations, and called upon all of the infernal names she knew. Lightning raced across the sky outside her father’s home. Nothing happened. She cut her arm, letting the blood drip into the summoning circle… still, nothing. Legion chittered softly to itself, the bones occasionally smacking against one another. The storm continued outside, rain now pelting her window.

In frustration, she gave up. Eluria blew out the candles, cleaned up the summoning circle, and crawled into bed.

Little did she know that the ritual had indeed worked.
