I claim no ownership to the character of Alvina, only as she appears here on Subeta.

Welcome, Chosen Undead...

After entering the verdant darkness of Darkroot Garden, you find yourself pursued by agents of the forest. You dodge, parry, defend, and continue to run, narrowly escaping your hunters. In the distance, you see crumbling ruins. Perhaps there you can find some refuge, or at the very least, give the strangers the slip.
When you reach the ruins, a voice speaks - seemingly from nowhere. Sitting atop a crumbling windowsill is a large grey cat. She addresses you directly:

"Is it not so that thou art new? Thou fared well to find me. But cometh thee not for the grave of Sir Artorias? My advice true, forget this! The legend of Artorias art none but a fabrication.…Traversing the dark? 'Tis but a fairy tale. Have thine own respect, go not yonder knocking for nothing, I say!"

"Well indeed, thou art a strange one! Nevertheless, I feel some liking for thee. I'm Alvina of the Darkroot Wood. I command a clan of hunters who track down defilers of the forest graves. What dost thou say? Wilt thou not join us? Oh yes, I believe we would suit thee well."
"Hmm, I see. A result most heathenish and gross. Then there is nothing more to say about this tedious reckoning. Be gone from here."
"I am very glad! And now thou art one of us! Let us establish a Covenant. And here, taketh this ring. If thou weareth that ring, it allows for thine summoning. If mine senses reveal intruders, then I will summon thee. Fend them off sir, I beseech only this. I shall summon others, who will by their honour work tirelessly with thee. Thou shalt receive great reward, and whatsoever ye shall pillage will be thine own. A true agreement, not so? But thou must heed the golden rule:The clan is thine own family. To thine kinsmen forever stay true. Dare'st not in any attempt to double-cross. Have no doubt, such wretchedness, never will we tolerate."
"Oh, I see. 'Tis a pity indeed. But this is thine stubborn choice alone. I cannot enforce it upon you then. If thine mind should be altered, forsooth speak to me once more."

Alvina is a large, grey spectral cat NPC not dissimilar to the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland, and greatly resembling the large black cats of Darkroot Garden known as Great Felines. What sets her apart from the latter beasts is her ability to speak. Upon first meeting her, she will ask the Chosen Undead (the player) their intentions of entering the Garden - the rumored final resting place of the fabled knight, Artorias. If answered favorably, she will extend an invitation to join the Forest Hunters - her personal vanguard, and protectors of the grave. Opting to join the Hunters nets the player the Cat Covenant Ring, with further rewards granted as one defeats forest invaders. Declining her offer disappoints her, but she will not become hostile, extending the offer yet again the next time she is spoken to.
However, telling Alvina that you're not there for any particular reason (by saying no to her initial question) will upset her, and the Forest Hunters will be tasked with killing you for as long as you remain in Darkroot, and every time you re-enter the forest and its respective areas thereafter - until you make amends with Alvina. The same goes for attacking her outright - she cannot be killed, as she simply cackles and vanishes on the spot.

In the past (as seen via the Artorias of the Abyss DLC), a kitten-like Alvina, still larger than a standard adult cat, can be seen. It appears that Alvina was close friends with the Great Wolf, Sif - at the time, a young pup - and their own dear friend, Artorias. Perhaps due to this friendship, Alvina rebukes the idea that Artorias is anything but a myth - a means of protecting his final resting place. Those that join the Forest Hunters, or those that run fast enough and fight off the Hunters, can eventually come across the grave of Artorias and will find themselves in a fight to the death with Sif, still protecting their friend even after his passing. Unfortunately, with or without the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, the player must kill Sif to progress the game.

All of Alvina's interactions with the player are brief, though her terse-but-warm personality shines through if the player joins her Forest Hunters covenant. Her disposition towards a player who has betrayed the covenant, or answered her initial question with a 'No' response, is cold and biting. Indeed, there is no greater fury than a Great Feline scorned, and Alvina calling upon her loyal Forest Hunters to kill the player for their transgressions is a fine example.

----

After your conversation with Alvina, you notice a man clad in armor similar to that of a samurai standing nearby, and a dark presence standing close behind him as well. The first man's red and gold armor stands out against the deep green surroundings. How curious it is, then, that you did not take notice of either of them before speaking to the great cat. Alvina notices your staring at him, and speaks again:

"Perchance… Hast thou met Shiva? A lad cometh from the far East, strong of arm; now a clan leader of ours. And yet… Still I feel that boy hides something. Of that I am certain. Small fear that he will use us badly… Yet on guard, we must stay. And that man that clingeth to Shiva like some shadow… ensure thou dost treat him with the same caution."
