Under Construction

When I was a child, my Mother taught me how to fish. It was important in our culture, because, well, we lived on a large island in the middle of the ocean, there was nothing else to eat. When the fish began dying around our island, we began exploring further into the ocean, not coming across anything other than maybe a tiny island or two. Our tribe was the only thing we knew...

By the time I grew up, our boats traveled for days before coming back. I'll always remember the color of the orange-red sunrise the day my Mother went exploring. She hugged me, before placing her forehead on mine, "I'll be back before sundown, try not to get into too much trouble today." I smile slyly at her. "You know me." I wave as they push the boat away from the shore. I had already decided to search for the sea glass from the beach on the southern part of the island. A dangerous place, where usually only our best hunters went. I'd been here a thousand times before, trusting my skills with my trident to protect me. Besides, I'd never met anything to be afraid of. My tribe has its superstitions and tend to live in fear, a concept I seem to have trouble with.

I make my way to the other side of the island, crossing off the coordinates on my map. I begin picking up the shining sea glass scattered near the shore. I make my way along the beach, allowing the water to caress my toes. The mid-day heat begins to get to me, so I sit and look across the sparkling, blue ocean. As I look across the waters, I see dark storm clouds begin to roll in. I stand, gathering my things and using my arm to shield myself from the sudden gust of wind. The air turns cold, and I run back to the village. The torrential rain bangs on the outside of our hut, the sound nearly deafens me. I light some candles, it's suddenly very dark, the storm clouds blocking out the sun overhead.
