Maahes was a god of desert storms and the personification of the summer heat. Like most children of Sekhmet, Maahes was a fierce protector, often guarding sacred places in the form of a lion. He was described as the “devourer of the guilty and protector of the innocent.”
Maahes helped protect Ra from Apophis as he traveled through the underworld, and defended the pharaoh in battle. A special duty of Maahes was to protect magical rituals.
He was thought to be the son of Ra and Bast, or Sekhmet and Ptah.
