From a young age, Messel had always been fascinated with natural history. Dinosaurs, ammonites, mammoths, you name it, they loved it. They devoured every book they could find in their hometown in Shadowglen on the subject of deep time, but when their little village's book shop proved not to be the equal to Messel's insatiable curiosity, they began looking for another means of getting their fix.

The lasirus was about nine the first time they heard stories of an old abandoned library in the middle of the forest outside town. According to stories the place was haunted, and anyone who disturbed the forest there would be cursed by the ghosts. But Messel was alive with curiosity and excitement at the idea of a library full of books they hadn't read yet, and made the impulsive decision to go looking for the building. It took many trips into the woods over the course of a month or so, but finally they found it- a huge square complex set around a courtyard from which a massive, ancient tree grew over the top of the building. A curious sort of tree- even though it was early summer, it's branches were dressed in the brilliant reds and golds of autumn.

Messel wasn't deterred by out of season trees, however, and headed into the building to look for the books. They were in for quite a surprise when a woman's quiet voice asked them why they were there, and when they explained they were looking for books about extinct creatures, one floated right off a nearby shelf and into their claws! Then, a spectral human woman with empty eyes appeared, mist-like in front of them. Robed in pastel shades of blue, purple, and white, she introduced herself as Shinko, and explained that she'd been the proprietor of the library for a very, very long time, but that there hadn't been a guest in nearly a decade. Fascinated, Messel spoke with the ghost for some hours, and when they left it was with not one but three new books on paleontology.

The lasirus would forge an iron-strong friendship with the ghost trapped in the forest library, often visiting to talk about books, the forest, or just to chat about their day to day life. Shinko, it transpired, did not remember who she had been before her death, nor did she remember even how she had died and come to haunt the ruins, or how long she had been here. But she was kind, had a snarky sense of humor, and appreciated Messel's company after so long alone.

In their adulthood, Messel has grown into an unapologetic nerd and goofball. They are fully willing to sing at the top of their lungs in public, regardless of how other people might judge them for it. They have long since left Shadowglen, taking a job at a as a collection assistant in the Pleistocene department at a natural history museum in Centropolis. While Messel does not live at or near the library with Shinko, they remain good friends with the ghost and visit often for mutual nerd-out sessions.

Messel identifies as Non-Binary, and uses they/them pronouns.

Never expected to acquire a roommate with a dark curse, but I guess she's my responsibility now.
