Messel would have just walked past the little display of old timey toys in the thrift store. They weren't in the store for toys, after all- they were there for some discount flatware, seeing as their position as a collection assistant in a natural history museum didn't exactly pay top dollar.

But then, they were hit by a sudden wave of dizziness, and one of the toys in the bargain bin spoke to them.

Taita wasn't always a beanie baby, you see. Once, not so long ago, she was a young apprentice magician, working in the employ of a powerful warlock while learning his secrets. And so far as she could tell, it was a good deal. Sure, she was the warlock's general dogsbody, doing chores around his mansion and being relegated to tasks in ritual castings that he simply couldn't be bothered with. But well... that's what being an apprentice or intern generally entailed, right? No, he didn't let her help with or even watch him do greater workings, but she'd get there eventually. She just needed to be patient. And besides, he wasn't just a warlock, he was also a businessman. He had a lot of things distracting his attention, so if her lessons seemed to be progressing with glacial slowness, well, that was only to be expected.

However, five years into her time with the warlock, she got a bit curious about those business dealings. The warlock was quite wealthy, running a lucrative business dealing in enchanted objects for various clients. But he seemed to have partnerships with companies that didn't make much sense to deal so closely with an enchanter of all things. So, curious and no small bit bored, Taita decided to use a spell of invisibility to spy on one of her master's meetings. While there, she was aghast to witness the warlock us his magic to enchant the representative from the other company, brainwashing him into agreeing to pay exorbitant amounts for a relatively simple service. Taita fled the room in a panic, and of course her warlock master heard her footsteps and saw the door fly open seemingly of its own accord. He caught her, and declared that if she wanted to abuse the skills he taught her to betray his trust, she would reap the punishment for her foolishness.

He cursed her, transforming her into a little bean bag doll- she was completely immobile and helpless during the daylight, able only to watch the world go by around her from the vantage point of a lifeless toy. By moonlight she regained some limited mobility, she could fly and walk around and speak, but her beanie body was incapable of lifting even the lightest of weights and had no claws or teeth to defend itself. As a final cruel joke, the warlock sold her to the thrift store, and placed a final curse to bind her to the person who would purchase her- if she moved too far from that person in an attempt to escape, she would become lifeless even under moonlight.

With what little magic she had left, Taita cast a spell to forge a mind link between herself and the first passerby who seemed... kind. Who didn't have little children who would probably tear her to pieces. That person ended up being the lasirus Messel, who was somewhat skeptical at first when a voice only they could hear begged them to buy what was to all appearances an ordinary beanie baby. But they agreed to it, and sure enough that night Taita was finally able to move and speak freely for the first time since being cursed. Messel was a bit frustrated that she hadn't warned them that by buying her, they'd bound themselves to her, but they also weren't going to just toss her out into the bin either. And fortunately, the lasirus had some friends who knew a very great deal about the occult that they could speak to about the issue...
