Greetings and welcome! If you have come here, then perhaps you already have an idea of what you're going to find. Let's jump right in!
Do you recall, back when you were younger, sitting in the backseat of the car and gazing out the window? Then, at some point, you found yourself watching the not-quite-there beings running beside you. These beings are called the Runalongs.
What is a Runalong?
A Runalong is a mysterious, smoky creature that travels beside cars, ships, and other moving vehicles. Runalongs are rare in worlds without fast transportation.
They are brought into being when someone, bored by a journey, looks out to watch the countryside go by. They daydream about a creature that follows their path and, without fanfare, it appears.
Sometimes it may follow certain rules, such as only jumping from streetlight to streetlight, or only running along fences. Others travel over or through the terrain with no concern for anything that happens to be in the way.
Most are indifferent to those they travel beside; they are merely using the same path. Others will pursue the vehicle. These Runalongs may be hunting the passengers, or they may be curious, or trying to compete with the traveling speed.
Regardless of their intent, they are fast, are skilled jumpers, and are persistent in their chase. It is said the athletic training discipline of Parkour can be traced back to a Runalong's travels through rough and varied terrain.
What do they look like?
A Runalong doesn't have a permanent shape, but one of the most common descriptions is a silhouetted appearance, with a lack of defining features.
There are three types of Runalongs: Land Form, Aerial Form, and Aquatic Form.
Land Forms can have various forms; a humanoid figure (without distinct features) is common. You may also find a cheetah (because cheetahs can reach the speed of a car on the freeway), a horse, a charging rhinoceros, or a long-legged dog. In reality, just about any swift or powerful land animal can be a Runalong. Pro tip: no sloth or turtle Runalongs have ever been reported, for obvious reasons.
Aerial Forms, nicknamed Flyalongs, tend to look like large birds or dragon-like creatures. They are more shadowy and likely to be seen only at a distance. These are fairly rare, as the people seeing them must have a coveted window seat on a plane. They swoop, dive, and soar, sometimes performing amazing and complicated acrobatics, usually for the sheer joy of the open skies. Pro tip: cloud layers are excellent places to spot a Flyalong, as is the middle distance of open skies. Relax your gaze and try not to focus too hard on any one place, until you spot the faint movement.
Aquatic Forms, nicknamed Swimalongs, tend to look like large sea serpents, fish, sharks, or dolphins. They leap from the water to track or investigate their quarry. Boat wakes are especially enticing, though the dolphin-shaped Runalongs also love to race the bow of the boat. Pro tip: a keen eye can see the dorsal fin of shark Swimalongs speeding alongside the boat, though they may be easy to miss in choppy water.
Who can see them?
Almost anyone who has ridden as a passenger in any fast mode of transportation has thought up these beings in the expanses of the landscape.
Runalongs are all but invisible to most people. They will often appear as slight shifts in the air or a flash of color or movement caught at the edge of one's vision.
Children and teens see Runalongs most often, though learning to drive causes a dramatic drop in sightings. Adults can see them as well, though they must be experienced in spotting them from childhood.
Do Runalongs interact?
Runalongs don't affect their environment; their passage leaves no tracks or signs of disturbance. On occasion, you can interact with one.
When you put your hand, palm down, out a window, it will jump and sway in the wind. The pressure you feel, not quite solid but not quite air, is the ghostly backs of the Runalong arching up for a pat.
Sometimes if the one who called them is particularly lonely or afraid, they will get closer. Some may even speak in humming voices without opening their mouths. Runalongs seem to be able to sense people who need their presence for the company, for entertainment, or are just used to them being present. The second you stop moving, the creatures turn and vanish behind themselves, disappearing to wherever daydreams come from.
Are they even real?
Runalongs are believed to be magical. A sort of glamour is cast, so that it might seem strange or unimportant to mention their existence. But of the most wonderful things about Runalongs is that everyone has imagined one in some form, despite this.
They are often hard to research, and obtaining evidence of their existence is next to impossible. This mysterious nature means that no one knows their exact origins. Your best bet is to nourish your imagination so that you can continue to see them throughout your life.
