Greetings and welcome, my students of the mysterious and strange! If you’re the sort who can’t help chasing after the oddities hiding in plain sight, you’ll want this guide in your back pocket. We’re about to unravel the world of creatures that most folks only meet far from civilization, or out of the corners of their eyes. So if you’ve come this far, you probably know what you’re in for. Let's dive in!

Remember that time you were a kid, stuck in the backseat during some endless drive, watching the world slip by outside your window? Maybe, if you were lucky (or bored enough), you caught a glimpse of “almost-there” beings racing beside you. That was your first introduction to the Runalongs.

Description:

They are brought into being when someone, bored by a journey, looks out to watch the countryside go by. They daydream about a creature that follows their path, and without fanfare, it appears.

A Runalong is a mysterious, smoky creature that doesn’t really have a permanent shape. Most people see them as shadowy figures, smoky and shifting with no clear details. However, more imaginative viewers may see rainbow trails or, for the lucky few, a brightly colored Runalong. Spotting one in action feels like watching a blur that seems almost alive.

Nearly everyone who’s spent time as a passenger, zoning out and gazing across open fields or cityscapes, has pictured these creatures at some point. Kids and teenagers are way more likely to see them. The older you get and the more you focus on driving, the less you notice. Grownups can spot a Runalong, too, but only if their inner child is still present.

Runalongs and their kin have split into three main branches; a move that let their legendary ancestors take over every element: land, water, and sky.

Runalongs - "The Everlasting Racer."

They use any form that screams speed or power can be a Runalong. Maybe a human silhouette (with no face or features), a cheetah, a horse, a charging rhinoceros, or some long-legged, stray dog as fast as a car. Honestly, if it’s quick on land, it’s fair game. You will never see a turtle or a sloth Runalong, for obvious reasons.

Flyalongs - "Sky Sovereigns"

The rulersof the thermals, also known as Flyalongs, exist high above the cloud line, where the air is thin and freezing. Think huge birds or even dragons, rarely coming near the earth. Most people only catch glimpses on plane rides, peering from window seats, watching them dip, dive, and pull stunts just for the thrill. They’re tough to spot, but clouds and wide-open skies are your best bet. Just relax your focus and look for something moving where nothing should be.

Swimalongs - "Liquid Velocity"

The Swimalong dropped their limbs in favor of fins and slip through rivers and oceans like sea serpents, sharks, or enormous fish. Swimalongs love chasing boats. Dolphin-shaped ones will race right alongside you at the bow. If you watch the water closely, you’ll spot their dorsal fins, but you need sharp eyes to spot them in rough waves.

Hunting and Feeding Behavior:

All forms of Runalongs are best known for their habit of traveling alongside cars, ships, planes, and other moving vehicles, and are rare in worlds without fast transportation.

Sometimes they may follow certain rules, such as only jumping from streetlight to streetlight, or only running along fences. Others travel over or through the terrain with no concern for anything that happens to be in the way.

Most ignore those they travel beside; they are merely using a parallel path. Others will pursue the vehicle. These Runalongs may be curious or trying to compete with the traveling speed. It is important to note that no matter how intimidating a Runalong may be in their pursuit, they never attack or harm those they are chasing. As soon as their target stops moving, the Runalong fades away, disappearing to wherever daydreams come from.

They don’t tire easily. You’ll see them keep pace for miles, bounding over obstacles as they chase the vehicle. Some people believe that’s where the idea for parkour came from in the first place: watching these beings tackle the wild landscape like it’s nothing.

As for food, Runalongs eat whatever you imagine they do. If you picture stunt performers, they might snap up imaginary coins or tokens as they jump signposts. Picture them as predators in the woods, and they’ll chase phantom prey. Basically, if your mind comes up with a meal, the Runalong will play along. Eating these daydream snacks does not hurt the person imagining them, and may double as a way to siphon off boredom.

Lair:

Ever wonder where they go when you’re parked? So does everyone else. Nobody’s ever caught a Runalong hanging out at rest, so their homes and families are still a total mystery.

Social Structure:

Sometimes they travel alone, other times in packs. Runalongs travel in groups known as strides, Swimalongs move in fleets, and Flyalongs gather in swoops. Whichever group you’re talking about, they don’t interact with the physical world and leave no trace. However, you can interact with them.

Hang your hand out the car window, and if the wind gives your palm an odd little nudge or sway, that’s the Runalong curving up for a quick pat.

On long drives, if you’re alone or feeling low, Runalongs have been known to drift in closer, even “talking” in quiet humming tones meant to comfort you. They just want to keep you company, or maybe stay close to the people who notice them most.

Combat:

Runalongs and their respective branches have been classified as completely harmless. As such, nobody’s bothered to figure out how to fight or kill them. If a world gets rid of all of its fast transportation, they may leave the world, but that is a drastic action to take against something that has never been a threat.

Conclusion:

To wrap it up, Runalongs are magic in the truest sense. Everyone has seen one at some point, but it always feels silly to talk about out loud. They slip right past any attempt to catch or study them. The best advice? Nurture your imagination, and you’ll spot Runalongs running beside you for years to come.
