Story by exquisite
The filtered light from Atebus was the only illumination at the outer edges of the forest, but Eliri didn’t need more than that—the path to the glade was shadowed but familiar. The thick vegetation gradually thinned to willowy trees and splashes of vibrant fauna that emitted a soft but otherworldly glow. The forest soon gave way to a serene clearing; the evening light reflecting off the glistening surface of the spring, a glittering shimmer dulled only by the vibrant luminescence of the glade’s twilight inhabitants.

Accompanied by the soft hum of the resident glowbugs, Eliri made her way to her favorite spot: a well-worn mossy patch that provided the best vantage point for studying the varied and radiant nocturnal inhabitants of the glade. She neatly tucked her tail around her, careful not to sweep up any star damsels busily flitting between the flowers.

The sounds of the glade welcomed her as she opened her field journal and settled in for an evening of carefully documenting the wing patterns of resident moths and sketching the unique caps of some of the many species of toadstool sprouting from the moss.

……........................

In the middle of perfecting a ruffled edge of nearby fauna, a crackle in the underbrush snapped Eliri out of her dedicated documentation. Just across the spring, between the long fronds of the willows, a glimpse of two tiny chartreuse ears caused Eliri to catch her breath.

She quickly lowered herself closer to the cool ground of the glen, careful not to make a sound. A hush fell over her corner of the glen, interrupted only by the occasional soft snore from a nearby field mouse snoozing under a dappled mushroom.

Could it be? She had spent so many nights lovingly capturing the beauty of the glade, all but hoping for a glimpse of its meekest resident, and catching nary a whiff or tuft to document. But there, in the sparkling light, a tiny limawn delicately pranced to the water’s edge, its dainty ebony hooves leaving only the faintest impressions in the soft ground—previously the only evidence Eliri had discovered that the notoriously shy creature was more than a Subetan myth.

Just as the Limawn leaned her head down to drink from the spring, a stinging pinch seared in one of Eliri’s back paw pads. A most indignant star damsel wretched its way out of a flower Eliri had inadvertently folded under herself in her haste; all the while using its pointed pincers to take out its fury on her poor paw. She stifled a yelp, but the flurry of angry zips and zoots from the insect as it shook off its pollen stupor resulted in a momentary lapse of composure as she yanked her paw to her belly. The sudden rustle of nearby foliage was enough to briefly disturb the sleeping field mouse, who let out a single sharp squeak when his napping mushroom was jostled about.

Eliri held her breath, sure that when she raised her eyes back to the edge of the pool, the limawn would be but a fleeting memory, having fled to safety in the deepest parts of the glade. To her surprise, she instead was met by the sight of the little limawn, still at the water’s edge, but now looking directly at Eliri’s mossy alcove, with a curious tilt to her pink-lined ears. Clutching her injured paw pad, Eliri was frozen in place, sure that if she moved an inch, her stroke of luck would run out. When the little creature returned to nibbling a frond, Eliri let out a small sigh of relief and rubbed her aching paw pad. After quietly reaching for her field journal, she resumed quietly sketching and taking notes. It wasn’t until several minutes later, distracted by a particularly playful glowbug, that the little limawn weaved her way back through the willow and out of sight.

As the cool light of Atebus gave way to the first warm tinges of morning light, the nighttime creatures of the glade faded back into their resting places. Luminescent toadstools and glow bugs turned off their lights as the lingering few star damsels gathered one last bit of pollen from the flowers before retreating into the brush. Eager to share her new findings, Eliri gathered up her papers, brushes, and inks—elated that tonight’s venture had been so richly rewarded.
