dixitque deus fiat lux et facta es lux

and god said: let light be made, and light was made.

What do you feel? He asks. The voice resounds in my head, redolent. Musical.

What do I feel?

I’m not sure what to say—think?—in response. I look down at my hands, which are covered in blood. Then I look upward. Light streams through the broken cathedral glass; dust motes fall from the sky, down, down, until they settle on my father's illuminated body. His hands are draped over my mother’s stomach. Forever. Blood seeps slowly from her and spreads along the chapel floor. Together, their blood flows like a river toward the first row of pews.

What do I feel?

Next to me, the sobs of my sister float to my ears as if through a solid door. My vision of her is almost kaleidoscopic. She beats the ground with her hands, and her mouth is open in a scream.

What do I feel?

From the ceiling of the cathedral hang the bodies of our neighbors Jeshua and Nathalie. They prayed to God when The Rapture started but the demons got to them first. In their brief, flickering moments of lucidity amid the possession, they came here, to Saint Michael's. Our temporary refuge. But Saint Michael, or whoever it is watching over this church, couldn't suppress the demons forever and soon they retook the bodies of our dearly departed. Their last night on earth Jeshua and Nathalie had their last moments of lucidity and spent them escaping their doubly occupied bodies. Now those same bodies sway with each rhythmic pounding on the barred door of the cathedral.

God chose You, He says. He speaks light and peace. I feel a sort of calm imbue my limbs.

For a moment, I close my eyes, feel these beams of sunlight on my face, and I can forget about the black things crawling through cracks in the earth to possess my mother and father.

Me? I think. Why me?

God chose you because you are Righteous in His eyes.

I hadn’t been to church since I’d left for college. I wasn’t sure how I was righteous in the eyes of God. I wasn’t even sure if God existed. Well, before this.

God chose you for the power and righteousness that your body can contain. You and your sister.

I look to my sister, and back again. And to the crowd of black things outside, pounding on the barred doors of the Cathedral.

The sadness in her eyes is gone. Her head tilts backward, and her eyes shine bright, bright, and six sets of wings unfurl. The wooden bars on the door split, and I see familiar faces coming toward me, with no recognition.

God chose you, for together you and I will smite the unholy.

Excruciating pain radiates on either side of my spine. I look at my hands, which glow with godly power.

Seraph, a deep voice resonates within me, different from the one before. Why do you hesitate to smite with the hand of God?
