Niall: The Champion

Once, there was a knight. He was loyal to his court and loved his queen. Motivated by his love for her, he won every battle. Delighted by this, the queen deemed him worthy of a task only her most compassionate and loyal knight could perform.
She sent him to Merana.
The knight didn't ask any questions, completely trusting in his beloved queens judgement. But as he reached Meranas sea cave, he wondered what he should possibly do there. He drew his sword, ready to fight and slay the sea witch.
And then everything went wrong.

As he entered the cave, his head began to hurt and a second later, he fell to ground, hearing only a distinct humming...
When he woke up, there was something wrong. He felt stronger, but also alien, like something had changed in him. He looked at his hands and nearly screamed. There were fins at the underside of his wrists. He reached for his back, only to find that he now had tails. Just as disgust at himself and the one who had done this began to crawl up inside of him, the sea-witch herself appeared. She hummed and smiled. Where just a moment ago had been anger and disgust, there was now loyalty and appreciation.For a moment, he wondered why, but then she sat down beside him and explained it all.
And he began following a new queen.
His old queen had betrayed him. She had never cared for his love for her. In fact, not even enough to keep him at her court or at least human. When she had heard of the possibility of giving Merana a sacrifice to ensure her own safety, she had decided to hand him out, as his constant affection for her was slowly getting annoying.
Deeply wounded by this truth, the knight decided to serve Merana, as he couldn't go anywhere else disfigured by his new appearance. For a few months, everything went well. Merana only sent him out to speak for her and the rest of his time, he trained or listened to her stories. He slowly began to believe that life could go on this way.
And then her newest order came.
He couldn't believe what he heard. He should kill for her? His old queen? But the longer he thought about it, the more it appealed to him. She deserved to die for what she did to him.
When he entered the throne room, he couldn't believe he had been away for several months. It all seemed so familiar.
He laid his eyes on the queen just as she laid hers on him. A second, they just stood there, gazing at each other. Then she opened her mouth to say something. But before a word could escape her lips, he had cut through her throat. For a moment he bathed in his glory.
And then he began to hate himself.
What had he done? He had ended a human life just to enact revenge. What kind of monster had he become? He slowly backed away and then, before the guards could catch him, he ran away, just trying to escape.

He looked at himself in the little river. Back looked a monster. He had run for hours, just to stop here, in the forest. He enjoyed the quiet of the woods, it gave him room to think. He could feel a pull in his stomach. Merana was searching for him, calling.But he wasn't going to answer. He wasn't going to hurt anyone anymore. He wasn't going to follow anyone anymore.

And then his third queen found him.
He didn't hear her, nor did he sense her coming in any other way. She just came into existence, like a natural spirit. When he turned, she stood perfectly still, reminding him of a tree, with little birds and butterflies flying around her. She must have been beautiful once. She still was. Her skin was bark, her hair root in the colour of the earth. Her eyes were big, green and empty. She was an unusual sight, but he had served Merana, and she had been a sea witch who had made him one of her kind. This woman -girl?- certainly still looked more human than he did. He bowed his head slightly, keeping her in his gaze, because he couldn't afford not to. He feared she'd be gone if he let her out of his sight for one second.She didn't move one inch. In fact, she hadn't since they met.Slightly confused, he decided to talk. "Mylady?"She bowed her head ever so slightly, and it was a slow movement, as if she could afford to waste time. She probably was immortal, other than he. Then she blinked and slight confusion and frustration crept into her gaze. When she answered, it was like the forest itself was talking through her. "I'm am not a lady."
"What are you then?"
She made a little movement towards him. Though he still sensed the pull of Meranas calling, it was as if this burden was lightened by this strange girls presence. "Something that had come to kill you, but now isn't sure anymore.", she whispered.The mention of his maybe near dead left him cold. He didn't care enough anymore to be shocked. He was a murderer and murderers deserved to die. He pointed to his chest, where his disfigured heart lay. "Do it. I'm ready."

She shook her head, causing a bird to fly away from it. "You have sad eyes.", she whispered and brushed his cheek and it felt like her fingers were a soft breeze against his skin. "They're like mine. You've been betrayed too." She stepped back, still shaking her head. "I cannot kill somebody with eyes as yours."Now he bowed completely. "Then I am in your dept. I will protect you from all harm, my queen."She stopped shaking her head. "Do as you please. But I am not your queen and I do not need protection."He believed her. She had come to kill him and she had spared him. It spoke of her strenght that she could choose."What are you then?"She turned her head slightly, before she disappeared into the woods, with him following her."A friend."
