Valasse sat down at the carved wooden table and traced one of the inlaid flowers idly with her claw. Her stomach rumbled with hunger and she hoped the food would be coming soon.
"May I ask what is the evening meal?" she said softly to a nearby elf bearing platters.
"Nyano," he said, "a rat to help you grow up to be a strong feli."
With that, he set down one of the shining silver platters and took off the top to reveal a small, quivering creature. The rat looked up at Valasse with large, helpless eyes and its small black whiskers shook with fear.
"You poor thing," Valasse said. "Do not worry. I won't hurt you."
To the amaze of all the elves present, she stretched out her paw and let the animal climb up her shoulder. He stood by her head, watching the elves warily and ducking beneath Valasse's arm whenever one came too close.
"I am sorry," she apologized. "I cannot eat him."
The tall, fair elf who had set the plate down laughed.
"Well then, what might I get you, m'dear?"
"Perhaps some oofa fruit. I don't think I could bear to harm any creature for my meal."
The elf smiled and returned bearing a large platter of the blue and green fruit. Then, reaching beneath his sleeve with a twinkle in his eye, he produced a smaller silver plate.
"For Nyano," he said and then disappeared among the hubub.

The feli bounded through the green fields surrounding Centropolis. The green blades of grass, accompanied by flowering plants of various shapes, swished as if blown by a wind when she ran past. Her constant companion, Nyano, jumped from her shoulder and grabbed hold of a particularly large, crimson rose. Valasse skidded to a halt and turned towards her friend.
"What do you think?" she asked.
"I think it's perfect. I love when we get to come out and play," Nyano replied.
"Great. Next week, we're going to the Omen Islands. I want to be able to take a swim and maybe catch a glimpse at some of those beautiful beta fish that come near the shores."
The two friends turned as they heard someone approaching. A glade archan came bounding up beside them.
"You two again?" he asked. "Don't you ever do anything productive? Why don't you go train with Jim or go fight in the Battle Coliseum. I think you'd make a pretty good fighter with practice."
Valasse shook her head.
"That's despicable. I don't know how you do it, harming other creatures. You should be spreading joy through Subeta, not fighting," she admonished.
"Suit yourself," the archan answered and then ran off towards Centropolis.

"Come on," Valasse said to Nyano. "We ought to be getting back. The elves said they had something special in mind for tomorrow and that we had better get a good night's rest."
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
An elder elf, with sparkling golden eyes looked down at Valasse and Nyano. Valasse's eyes brimmed with tears, but she slowly nodded.
"I do. I want to go out and help the others in Subeta. I don't want to leave my family, but I feel there is so much more I could be doing," she said.
"In that case," he said with a sigh, "I have no reason to hold you back. You have a light within you and a pure heart. When you joined our family, you became the youngest among us and we are sad to see you leave. We shall give you our blessing and the best parting gift we could think of."
He reached out and gave Valasse a small, silver necklace with a flower pendant. Reaching around her neck, he fastened the clasp. Then, stepping backwards, he motioned for her to peer into the lake beside him.
She gasped when she saw the bright colors on her white fur. A dazzling spectrum feli gazed at her from the reflection of the water.
"I'm beautiful," she whispered.

"It is our gift to you. Now you outwardly show the divinity and joy you carry inside you."
Valasse and Nyano padded softly down the streets of Centropolis. They were quiet, imagining where they would next find themselves. After a moment, their ears perked up to the sound of muffled crying. They found a young kerubi hiding on the concrete steps of a building.
"What's the matter dear?" Valasse asked, concerned.
"The boys," the kerubi said, her voice shaking. "The boys, they called me ugly."
"Darling, you are beautiful. They just can't see what's within you. Would you like to come with me for a while?" -Shakespeare
