Once there was a bird, a spirit of the tallest heights and strongest winds, that flew so close to the limits of the sky that she could see the stars even in daylight past the limb of the world. But she had no feet, and no way to rest; while she could soar over the sea, she could not settle upon the waters. So she watched the surface and tried to spy beneath the waves, and grew from afar to know a shining-tailed spirit of most beautiful blue-green. This lithe creature was fast, and brave! fighting sharks and squids and abyssal dragons for smaller brethren, and she danced under the water with breathtaking elegance. For this guardian the sky king dared the surface of the ocean, dipping into that boundary between sea and sky and finding stability in the currents driving the waves, and pledged her soul to the sea king's forever.
