Summary under the back cover :

A girl living in a house too big for her adopts a cute kumos whose name makes her think of a manga she loves. She decides to recreate the manga through him and the house staff. But of course things won't turn out as she imagined...

The story I tell here mirrors the story I had with this pet. When I adopted him, I wanted him to be the perfect fanpet. But this little kumos became a character in itself, slowly deviating from the original idea.
I hope that in spite of that this pet is still an acceptable tribute to my favourite manga.
So, it's with some apprehension that I present you the story of Kumoshitsuji.

At noon : that kumos, introduced

The little girl was happily giggling and hopping all over the place. The maid had prepared a bath for the newcomer. He didn't talk, which amazed her. His fur looked even more strange: blue all over his body, except for a black tuft on the top of his head. The tailor had been called, he would come that afternoon.

When Marinette brought him to the staff room, everybody marvelled at him. He seemed such a nice dog (even if he was said to be a kumos, nobody cared about it). The strokes got interrupted by the little girl.

"Why am I the last person to see him clean ?"

"He needs to eat first, miss."

"Well now that you all saw him, I'll tell you my plan !" the little girl said, without noticing the others' worried faces.

"As his former name was Kumoshitsuji, he will be my butler, and now he will be called Sebas-chan ! You, Marinette, you will be Mey-Rin ! Don't change anything, you are as useless as her ! I'll just provide you with glasses."

"Yes miss", Marinette said, a bit bitter.

"Armel, you will be Finnian ! You aren't as strong as he is, but you are the worst gardener ever ! Ignace, you'll be Bardroy ! You are a much better cook than him but when you started you were as bad as him ! And you Firmin, you'll be Tanaka !"

The staff was still gasping in shock when the little girl went out of the staff room, "Sebas-chan" following her. It's only when she shouted "what about my meal ?" that the staff went back to their occupations.

"What is this all about ?", Ignace asked.

"I'll lend you the manga", Marinette said with a sigh.

In the morning : that kumos, adopted

It was morning in the big manor. The father was away for work for one week. The mother was away with some friends of hers for some days. Their only child was alone. But she didn't really care. Her parents, probably feeling guilty for leaving her on her own again, had given her the authorisation to go to the shelter and adopt a dog.

With the maid, Marinette, she went happily to the center and jumped everywhere. Sadly she could only take one dog. If not she would have bought the whole shelter. After all, her parents were rich, she could do what she wanted. One dog attracted her attention, because his fur looked blue. That hair colour was unusual. It must have been a rare breed. It was settled, she wanted that dog.

"All the papers are filled", Marinette said.

"Yeah ! I want my dog now!"

"It's not a dog, it's a kumos" the shelter employee said.

"What was his name ?" the girl asked.

"Kumoshituji" the man answered

"You mean, like Kuroshitsuji, the manga ? It's awesome ! I'll be calling him Sebas-chan and I'll dress him as a butler with nice white gloves on his paws !"

"No, you won't do anything that will harm that do... kumos", Marinette said feebly, in a desperate tentative to manifest authority.

"Poor boy..." the man muttered as he watched them leaving. For he unfortunately was well-placed to know what happened when a spoiled little girl with lax parents got her hands on a dog.

At night : that kumos, generous

"Did you see Sebas-chan ? I'm looking for him !"

"Last time I saw him, he was in the garden miss", Marinette answered.

"Then hurry up and go fetch him !"

"Yes miss..."

Marinette saw the kumos running away from the former stables. Wondering what was going on, she opened the door... and was confronted with more cats that she had ever seen in her life. They were everywhere. She shouted.

"What's going on ?" the little girl asked at arriving with Ignace. "Oh my, I've never seen that many cats before ! Oh look how cute it is, Sebas-chan is bringing them food !"

"We can't keep him, he's stealing food from the kitchen ! And these cats... It looks like some are even... zombies or something !" said Marinette, still shocked.

"They say abandoned children love abandoned animals, said Ignace. I guess it's the same for kumos... kumi... kumoses... whatever. I didn't know what to do with the stables anyway, why not keep the cats ?"

"Her parents won't let her keep that many cats here, said Marinette, much more reasonable. Not talking about the zombies."

"I know they will, the girl squealed. I don't want the cats to go to the pond ! Look how they are cute here ! And it's so in character that Sebas-chan loves cats !"

The little girl was right. Her parents can't resist her much anyway. She kept the cats and the former stables got converted into a cat paradise. Sometimes some leave to live their lives in the wild, other arrive, gathered by that strange blue dog who loves cats. Some say it's the most beautiful private cat shelter of the region.

In the afternoon : that kumos, a butler

The tailor had arrived with good news. He had already made a butler costume for a dog some time ago. Finally the owner never went to fetch it and told him they wanted their dog to look like a pony instead. He had declined and was left with the butler costume. It fitted Sebas-chan as if it was made for him. The little girl squealed in delight. There was even a plush fob watch that could be strapped to the front right paw glove, and a napkin that could be clipped on the other front paw glove.

She got even more delighted when, at everyone's surprise, the kumos showed he was able to walk on his two back legs. It seemed his past owners had taught him some tricks.

Epilogue

When the little girl saw the kumos wag his tail and run to lick her, she knew his new name pleased him more than the former one. It was the first time she was acknowledging the desire of another being than her, and it filled the staff with hope. Indeed, the spoiled brat grew into a nice lady, very humble and caring to others despite being a famous singer. When asked about her down-to-earth attitude, she would often joke saying it was her dogs' doing, remembering the blue kumos with a slightly nostalgic smile.

Mey-rin, Finnian, Bardroy, Tanaka and Sebastian Michaelis (Sebas-chan) are characters created by Yana Toboso for the series "Kuroshitsuji" aka "Black Butler". Marinette, Armel, Ignace and Firmin are my own characters, that only have their jobs in common with the aforementioned character.

At midnight : that kumos, himself

The scream echoed through the hall of the manor. The staff rushed to see what had happened. The little girl was crying in rage, the kumos was hiding under a piece of furniture and growling. The costume was lying on the floor in shreds.

"What happened ?" Marinette asked.

"Sebas-chan tore his costume apart! He upset me and I want him to be punished !" the spoiled girl answered.

"Excuse me, but can you tell me again me why you don't like your father talking about your future ?" Marinette patiently asked.

"I want to be a singer but he doesn't want to. I don't care about his company" she answered, pouting.

"Don't you realize you act towards Sebas-chan like your father acts towards you ? Forcing a life on him, one that he has no saying about?"

The little girl opened her eyes wide upon realization, and threw herself into Marinette's arms, crying with all her heart, like only children do. After calming down, she crouched in front of the kumos, until he willingly walked towards her. She removed what was left of his costume, hugged him and muttered "I'm sorry", while he licked her cheeks. Then she decided to change the kumos' name to something that would suit him better than a reference to a manga.

"Is there a word for "who likes cats" ?" she asked.

"Given that Î³Î¬Ï„Î¿Ï‚ is the greek for cat it would be something like gatophiliac I assume." Ignace answered.

"Are you sure it's not the pervert meaning ?" the gardner asked him in a low voice.

"That sounds like gÃ¢teau !" the little girl cried in happiness "and I love my kumos at least as much as cakes ! Do you like Gato ?" she asked the kumos.
