"It's not a name, but a state of being."

The words fill your head but the strange creature in front of you does not move its beak as it fluffs out its wings and twists its head at a sickly angle. Its neck contorts this way and that as it looks you up and down, hollow eyes peering through your very being, its curiosity seeming peaked by your presence the same way a cat is interested in a mouse.

"This form is only temporary; I have been many things, gone by many names, but I will always be."

Though you can hear the words clearly in your head it's absurd to think this nightmarish creature is producing them. As it 'speaks' it seems to be getting closer and closer, you try to back away and even though your feet are moving it doesn't feel like you're putting any ground between yourself and the creature's diligent eyes.

"You doubt your sanity? Think you've passed on to another form of reality? Are you dreaming? Anything is possible.."

This thing seems to be taunting you, what does it want? You try to speak but find you cannot. You grab at your throat in panic, eyes widening as if pleading with the creature to let you go.

A deep laugh, a chuckle. It seems to echo not through your head this time, but the entire room. Was it a room? It didn't feel confined but the darkness swallowed all light, the only visible thing at all being the creature.

"I'm afraid you will have to leave the same way you came in."

Its beak spreads open, as if to smile, and in doing so it reveals hundreds of thin pointed teeth. It's right in front of you now, you feel its putrid breath on your face and gag as it opens its mouth.

"Farwell."

Just when you think you're about to be lunch you wake up with a start; sitting stright up in bed, eyes wide, breath quick, a cold sweat coating your skin. A moment later you calm, realizing you're safe in your own room. Only a dream? Or had you gone somewhere just now?
