Hi, I'm Jolie, and I'm from Hawai`i. This pet is in memory of Zach Manago.

In December 2010, my friend was notified about the loss of his brother, Zach Manago. Zach was known as an all around all-star in baseball and in bicycling. One night, Zach and his friends joined in an event called the Island Ride where 30-40 cyclists ride around the island at night. The cyclists are required to wear helmets, pads, lights, reflectors, and other safety gears. They travel in a line at the same pace.

While riding casually, Zach and his friend who rode in front of him talked as if everything would be okay. It was until a bang was heard. Zach's friend turned around to see himself up close to a white SUV. Off to the side, Zach laid on the ground bleeding. As quickly as the bang came, the sound of rubber burning filled the air as the SUV took off. The group stopped to help aid the young 18-year-old boy up. Zach was taken to the nearest hospital, but his friend couldn't stand to see him dying. Later that evening, Zach passed away.

Zach's death never let the friend sleep that night. All he thought about is he just lost a friend -- a real friend. He couldn't think straight and never understood why it had to be Zach. One moment, Zach and him were talking, and the next it felt as if Zach was gone already. The SUV was so close that it also could have been him that got hit. Nothing felt fair anymore, so he felt like he had to make it.

He got on his bike and rode around the neighborhood at about 3 a.m, 2 hours after Zach passed away. A couple other friends of Zach joined in the ride. They searched the entire city checking every garage, every house, building, street, probably anything they could for that one white SUV. Finally, they came upon a 25-year-old man experiencing a hangover. A white SUV was parked by his house with blood all over the front. The friends had the man arrested, but he protested that he never even went out that night. That wasn't convincing enough. At 5 a.m. the man was taken to jail for 1st degree homicide and for fleeing the scene.

All it took was about 10 friends, 2 hours of searching an entire city for one man, and love because of a friend. But it wasn't just a friend. He was someone worth it.
