“This is it.” William raised the microcentrifuge tube to the light, fixing his hungry gaze on the violet-stained fluid within. It was a few microliters, hardly enough to cover the surface of a dime, but that tiny droplet could wipe out half the population of the United States in a matter of hours.

Behind a pair of polarized sunglasses that turned his expressionless face into a cold mask, Albert flicked his attention from William’s avid features to the microfuge tube. “This is the final strain? You’re sure it’s safe?” his voice, inflectionless and flat, had a razor edge that William could only detect because of the years they had spent working together.

William’s haggard face pinched into a scornful look that he shot at the older man. Albert’s thin lips twitched up slightly as he accepted the microfuge tube from William. Of course, it was a foolish question: William wasn’t the lead virologist at Umbrella’s main US lab for nothing. The task Albert had given him was well within this frighteningly brilliant man’s abilities.

Albert pocketed the microfuge tube and turned to go. He heard William mutter something as he went back to the electron microscope slides he’d been studying; it might have been a “Good luck” but Albert couldn’t say for sure.

So far, the plan was going off precisely as expected. Bravo Team had been lost in the Arklay mountains for nearly a full twenty-four hours, and Alpha had gone in to rescue their fellows from whatever danger had befallen them. No one in STARS knew what they were getting into. No one knew that none of them would be leaving alive.

The helicopter touched down next to the crumpled rubble of Bravo’s craft. It didn’t take long for a pack of Cerberus to descend, and the first was taken down neatly. They reached the mansion: confused and frightened, they looked to him as the eternally calm, confident Captain. Their faith in him was a beautiful thing. He had nurtured it over the past two years, just as he had nursed all of his plans to their fruition, and now it was time to pull the wool from their eyes.

He only wished he could be there to see their faces when they realized the truth.
