the watchmaker
The antique oak-finished clock sang out, announcing into the small, yet rather luxurious work space what hour it was; 3 am. Emilian lifted his head, his tired eyes glancing to the great clock mounted on the wall. He removed his small, round glasses from his face and slowly rubbed his eyes. His work lay in front of him, scattered into pieces. This watch wasn't even close to being completed, but it was getting late. He hated leaving things unfinished. He had lost many nights worth of sleep to complete even one watch. Slowly standing from his worn out leather chair, he gently folded a cloth over the work in progress.
Emilian shuffled his way to the door, looking back to the desk before exiting down the hallway to his chambers. He scratched at his unshaven beard that he had been neglecting. He began removing his tie as he entered his bedroom. The room smelled faintly of dust. Emilian never really had much a reason to keep his place clean all the time. He never fathered any children, nor ever married. He enjoyed the peace and silence that came with his work; it was his sanctuary.
A yawn escaped his mouth as he removed the fine, gold pocket watch that hung from his waistcoat by its delicate golden chain. He opened the watch; 3:06 am. He set the watch on the nightstand next to the bed. It was the most important possession he owned. His tired fingers began slowly unbuttoning the nice, blue waistcoat, followed by the once clean-pressed dress shirt he wore. He kicked off his shoes and stepped into the bathroom.
His salt and pepper hair was slicked back. It was starting to look a little dried out and dirty, but a shower could wait until tomorrow. After removing his slacks, he pulled back the blankets and sheets of his bed. They were cold and uninviting, most likely due to the fact that he hardly ever used them. Exhaling a heavy, tired sigh, Emilian climbed into bed and pulled the unpleasant layers over his body. He lay awake in bed, staring at his watch on the table beside the bed. Reaching over to the watch once more, he flips the face cover open; 3:14 am.
He pulled his arm back beneath the covers and closed his eyes. His mind was still rested on the watch in the other room, its finished look, the precise movement of the gears, the brilliant shine on the face. The soft glow of a corner streetlight filtered through his bedroom window.
The constant tick tock tick tock of the pine clock across the room eased his mind, but also made his heart restless; reminding him of all the work he still had to do. He closed his eyes, pushing the thoughts into the back of his mind just long enough to fall deep into a sleep. He knew that the sun would be rising over the horizon soon and he could return to his work. His breathing began to move in time with the clock's song as he drifted into the land of sleep.
