Keadnu was startled when his brother crawled into his bed, even though Kraed had been very careful not to make any noise as he did — and even though this was certainly not the first time.

— Krad? — he turned his head backwards, just a bit, his long hair partly stuck under the angel boy's head. — Bad dreams?

A long pause followed, but there was still no response besides the wild beating of Kraed's heart against Keadnu's back. After a while, Kraed only strenghtened his grip to his little brother's shirtfront and hid his face deeper against the dark skin of his nape, breathing unsteadily and shaking his head no. No, don't make me say it.

Keadnu was never any good in understanding people's emotions, let alone comfort them in their suffering. But he cared for Kraed more than he did anybody else, and there was no one he wished to understand better than his own brother. So he still brought himself to rest his hand over Kraed's on his own chest, in a silent gesture he hoped would say It's alright. I am right here.

I will not leave you.

And, to Kraed, nothing else mattered.
