Baby Crocodile

"How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin
How neatly spreads his claws
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!"

- Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, 1865

Someday, I'm going to grow up big and strong! I'll eat whatever or whoever I want... when I want, where I want! I'll be the biggest crocodile the world has ever seen!
...But I guess that will have to wait, and until then I have to settle with being The Little Crocodile. ):
--------------------------------------
He started life as a tiny hatchling, smaller than a shoe. Big hands came out of nowhere and scooped him up. Where was Mama? These pink hands were nothing like what he expected. Eventually, he was placed in a clear box with some rocks and plenty of water, and occasionally fed these curious little orange fish. He liked the fish. They felt just right, wriggling in his tiny jaws. Life was good enough, even though Mama was nowhere to be seen.

One day, another man with big pink hands took him and his box home, to a nice little house with a white picket fence. There, he was presented to a little boy who looked an awful lot like this man, with smaller pink hands. The child stuck his hands in the box and picked him up - this scared him, and he bit at the pink fingers. The man laughed, the boy cried, and he was once again safe in his box.

It wasn't meant to be, however. Soon enough, he grew too big for the box, and his hunger increased exponentially. "Dangerous", they said. "Take him to the swamp." So the man with the big pink hands took him very carefully, putting a strap with a big shiny buckle around his jaws. He was loaded into a big metal thing, and something closed on top of him, placing him in the dark. They drove for what seemed like hours. Light flooded into his holding space. He was picked up, very carefully. The strap was removed, his jaws went snippety-snap, and he was chased into the murky waters. The man with the pink hands left with the big metal thing. The now not-so-little crocodile submerged himself, and found that he missed the boy.

Reports are circulating that a massive crocodile has been seen roaming the streets. The rogue reptile has so far eaten a few small animals - mostly dogs - and approached a woman on her daily jog. No injuries or human casualties have been reported as of yet, but local police are advising the public to remain indoors until the animal can be located.

Orwell, for that was the name he had given himself once he was no longer small enough the be 'The Little Crocodile,' gently pulled his massive body into the cool waters of the swimming pool. The rottweiler who belonged to the family with the swimming pool kept its distance but continued to bark an alarm - to no avail, as nobody at the residence was ultimately at home. This pool is nice, he thought to himself, but I'd much rather be in a marsh. And if that dog comes any closer, snippety snap, I'll end that yap.
--------------------------------------
Orwell, or "The Little Crocodile" is a reminder that no wild animals should ever be kept as pets. Baby alligators and crocodiles were "fad" pets in the 1950s and 1960s, especially in the United States. But they grow much larger than most people can handle - and very quickly! An adult American Crocodile like Orwell will grow up (on average) to be between 13 and 16 feet long and weighing anywhere from 880 to 1,100 pounds!
