The books in the restoration room are so ancient that a clumsy movement or careless motion could set great tomes of ancient knowledge crumbling to dust. It is by far Saverin's favorite section of the library he is working so hard to archive for the benefit of knowledge seekers.

If it takes him an hour to extract a musty leather-bound book from the pile and settle it onto its proper shelf, he never complains. Those that are too frail to bear the weight of fellow books he stacks in a separate pile. During the strongest daylight hours, he works to carefully extract the words from these fading works of glory that are beyond his help so that at the very least, their knowledge will be preserved. There has not been a passage lost to history since he accepted the lonely position of archival expert.

He is loath to leave his beloved library at the end of the day but even a book enthusiast willing to give up a social life for those contained in the written word must eat now and then. Sleep is also vital for one intent on copying ancient texts in perfect translations. Saverin takes wing, carefully sealing the curtained balcony doors and using the marble rail as a launching point to grant his wings a rush of evening air.

He glides on silent wings over giant oaks and slender birch trees that are thick with summer leaves. The prey animals are scarce tonight. It does not take him long to figure out why.

The hikers are standing at a fork on the broad trail that will take them to Veta Lake or Riverside, staring down at their map and arguing fiercely.

"I told you we should've taken that shortcut back at Kanis Pass. It's going to take us an extra hour to reach Veta Lake now and the sun's going down."

"I always knew you were a Scaredy Serpenth, but I didn't think even you were so afraid of the dark."

"I'm more afraid of being forced to eat that gravel and grease you call trail mix. I can't believe you were stupid enough to buy trail mix from Quick Bites, of all places. The only good trail foods are at GoOutside. Even a chibi pet knows that much!"

"Says the one who wouldn't pay a hundred coins for a better room at the inn even if it gave him fleas."

"At least if I had fleas, they wouldn't die from the smell of my armpits!"

Saverin perches just above the noisy pair. Loud noises are intolerable but he is amused by the notion that he could take down these humans with his claws before they even thought to look up. If they were not such smelly creatures, he might be tempted to use his advantage but a week of illness is a week separated from his precious books. He takes to the air without the pair being any the wiser.

The elm grove is something of a distance from his home tree but at least he knows he will find quiet and plenty of prey there. He is able to capture a large rabbit that will satisfy his hunger. He eats his kill where he took it. Carrying an animal like a mere eagle is beneath his dignity and he has no desire to fill his tidy nest with the bones of small animals.

The warmth of his nest is welcome when he glides through the opening in its thatched side. Though it can hardly be called a house, it is much more sheltering than the simple rounds created by ordinary birds. He even has a small "library" of his own with just a few books that are his special treasures. Before he settles down for a good read, he takes special care to clean every last bit of flesh and bone from under his claws, flicking the bits into the night. It would never do to soil a book, even a ridiculous book, with such filth.

He rises with the dawn, eager to get back to work. A large parcel awaits him on the library's stone steps. The newest arrivals are more modern than many of the tomes he has shelved, though the youngest in the collection was published fifty years ago. He begins to pull these new arrivals from their packaging, reading a few pages in each to determine which section of his filing system they best suit.

The defaced book makes his feathers ruffle in outrage. He screams a challenge at whatever inconsiderate excuse for a life form that would dare to scribble notes in the margins and fold the once-flawless pages into a wrinkled mess. The worst crime by far is the sticky substance that makes some of the pages cling together. He can probably preserve segments of the author's work, but there are at least three pages that will never reveal their contents, even with magic. He imagines some careless university student slowly roasting on a spit as he stokes the fire with his wings. His beak clacks in satisfaction at the image.

The only task that can soothe him now is the rhythm of copying passages. His meticulous handwriting creates perfect lines of text that turn forgotten languages into Subetan tongues understood by all. His love of books extends into a mastery of languages that is unrivalled in Subeta. There has never yet been a passage he could not solve. One is not trusted with the greatest literary treasures of the land without good reason.
