Why was I put here? Left to sit in the Adoption Center for who knows how long? The lonely Experiment #911 pondered all kinds of things as he sat in his room in the Adoption Center. It seemed like a long time since he'd been sent there and yet he only had one friend; a very kind worker who was in charge of cleaning the rooms on Clothings side of the hall. This workers name was M, just M. This was obviously a nickname of sorts so perhaps this man had a few secrets as well.
Clothing spent most of his days talking with M about the things that came to his mind. Was he here in the Adoption Center because he was ugly? Or maybe it was simply because his name was Clothing? Why would a person give such a name to an Experiment as lovely as he? At that very moment, M had mentioned that perhaps Clothing should try his hand at sewing. A lot of the pets now-a-days had some sort of clothes on, or at least a special talent of sorts. Maybe a few articles of clothing would give potential owners something to look at. Clothing agreed that perhaps it was time for him to learn a skill so he went out with M to buy a sewing machine for his room.
Sadly, that sewing machine stayed in a far corner of Clothing's room for a few weeks. He was too nervous to try because he thought he would fail miserably and all the effort of going to the store would have been for nothing. Thankfully, M was able to get a day off and give Clothing the words of encouragement he needed to at least turn the sewing machine on. As soon as it was started up, M took his handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to Clothing as his very first canvas for sewing. Tragically, the moment Clothing pressed his hoof to the handkerchief, it caught fire and destroyed the sewing machine.
Days passed and Clothing still couldn't get over the fact that his attempt ended so badly; he's never set anything on fire before. Maybe him being literally on fire, as all Experiment #911 are, wasn't attractive in a pet. He came to the conclusion that if he wanted to be loved by someone, even a little bit, he'd need to get rid of this flaw. Once he had strengthened his resolve, he asked for M to help him remove the fire from his body. They both stepped outside and got everything set up. M had the hose at the ready while Clothing made sure all the damp towels were at arm's reach. M set the hose to sprinkle and sprayed it over Clothing. It was so painful, as if part of himself was melting from his body. He knew however, that if he left any flames alive, they would slowly come back. He made sure to stand as still as possible regardless of the pain until M came around full circle and told him that they were gone. Once he got the okay, he fell tiredly to the ground and covered his entire body with the damp towels in an attempt to sooth his wounds.
It took Clothing a while to heal. During that time, he had refused to leave his room due to his sores being scary looking. He did ask that M get him a new sewing machine though; he was ready to give it another shot. M returned with a very fancy looking one this time. He had told Clothing to take it as a late birthday gift since there's no way this machine would get set on fire. Gratefully, Clothing set up the sewing machine as his desk; he had a shirt to practice on in his drawer already. This time he was actually able to see how well he could sew. It actually wasn't that bad. Aside from the stitching being a bit wobbly, he managed to get the tears in the shirt back together.
These little fixes were his practice for the longest time. Again, Clothing was afraid to move forward in his self-training in fear that he would fail. Clothing was one to stay in, or at least very close to, his comfort zone. M, of course, was there to tell him there was nothing to worry about. What else is there to do in this room other than hone your skills? Clothing knew that more times than not, M was right. They went to the store to buy cotton filling and fabrics. While in the store, some very nice (and expensive) brown fabric had caught Clothings eye. Even though he bought it, he kept a mental note that he wouldn't waste it on practicing; this fabric would become something great.
After months of making tiny pillows, M explained to Clothing that it was time to try making something to wear. The whole purpose of the sewing machine was to create the appeal that he was so certain everyone wanted. He nodded and went to his drawer to get the special brown fabric he had been so fond of. Today was the day that Clothing would make that something great. He told M to let him do this alone and sent him out of his room. There were a few mistakes involved but none that couldn't be fixed with some time and a pair of scissors. Making the item had taken longer than Clothing thought but he was very happy with the result; it was a small tie. He was beside himself at this happy day and went to find M to show him the result of all those months of hard work. He continues to wear this tie today.
He and M began making more and more trips to the fabric store. Clothing had got a few complements on his tie; a new experience for him since he's never received a complement before. Many fails and many ties later, M and Clothing headed to the store again but what little money he was making wasn't enough to buy everything he needed. The sewing machine wouldn't do all the work; he needed his own sewing needles and thread of all colors and he wouldn't dare ask his good friend M to buy these things for him. While in the store, Clothing told M of his just thought up plan to sell the ties he was making and get a small shop of his own. It surprised M to hear Clothing make such a statement since he's usually too afraid to try new things. M remembered reading in the newspaper about a shop that had closed down recently and decided that it might be a good idea to offer it to Clothing. He led Clothing there without telling him where they were headed. Once they got there, Clothing was beside himself by his fortune. They both knew that they couldn't afford the small building right now but M was always one step ahead of everything; he had saved a small amount of money from working in the Adoption Center and figured that Clothing was talented enough to make the money and pay him back eventually. M made the call and within a few months, Clothing had his own store that he would call home.
Business was extremely slow for a long time. Clothing was just doing repairs at this shop and in his spare time, he would make a tie or two which he'd display and put on sale for the customers coming in. He had just finished putting out three new ties when a little girl came in crying. She had a big poofy dress rolled into a ball in her arms. Clothing remembered that she had stopped crying long enough to get a good look at him; perhaps she had never seen a pet running his own shop before. When she had finished looking him over, she told Clothing what happened. Mr. Giraffe, I broke the dress I was supposed to wear for my birthday. She started crying a little bit again. Mommy is going to be mad at me.
The little girl pushed the dress onto Clothings counter. He lifted it and saw that the entire bottom of this dress had been torn to shreds, there must have been some kind of accident. It was beyond repair; he had no idea what to do. Even though he thought this, he couldn't just leave the girl to fend for herself in this situation; he would remake the dress from scratch.
Clothing picked up the phone and dialed M as fast as he could; he'd need another loan for this one. While the phone was ringing, he asked the girl when sh'd need the dress. Tomorrow? What form of sorcery would he need to dabble in to manage something like that? M answered the phone and listened to the hastily explained situation. He was on his way with the fabrics as soon as he hung up. In between sketches of the dress, he explained to the girl that she needed to go home as to not worry her mother. Clothing would finish the dress in time, he promised.
The girl left and M came rushing in. All the sketches were finished and they could begin immediately. The dress would require about 5 layers not including the designs on the front. M closed the shop and wheeled over the manikin while Clothing got measurements from the dress the girl came in with. Thank Shinwa that the girl was only a child or there would have been no hope of finishing.
M positioned the manikin and threw the cut fabric over it. A perfect fit on the first try; layer one was finished. Next was the poof. M wouldn't be able to help Clothing anymore from here on out so he sat near the back of the store to watch him work. The ruffles were sewed on so fast that M could have sworn he missed a bunch of action just by blinking. Clothing moved onto the 3rd layer without missing a beat. Layer three was actually the second layer of the torso. He added the paddings and the supports. She was just a young girl so the dress didn't actually need much of that. Layer 4 brought layers 2 and 3 together. Clothing started by sewing some ruffled and lace at the base of the torso lining to make a cleaner transition. This same ruffle and lace combo spiraled around the dress into a bustle at the floor.
Clothing stood back to admire his work so far. Nodding to himself, he looked to M for approval only to find that he had fallen asleep. Desperately trying not to look at the clock, Clothing began layer 5, the touch-ups. This dress had a lot of stuff as he calls it; the kind of stuff that you can achieve on the first time around. The ruffles on layer 2 weren't poofy enough and had to be pinched, the lace needed a second layer in some parts, and the collar and sleeves were added.
The sun poured into the window as he began the designs. Sparkles and beads were all over this dress. For the sake of time, he strung the beads together and sewed them all around the dress. Each sparkle was applied one at a time with the help of the original dress. Finally he was finished. With a sigh of relief he checked his watch, 5am it said. He had been working nonstop for over 12 hours and desperately needed to be asleep. He put a blanket over M shoulders before heading to his bedroom. He'd have to be up again soon to meet with the girl again anyway.
The few hours of sleep didn't help Clothing much, he was very lethargic and would probably have to close his store for the day. He sighed at the realization; M had always loaned him money and here he was again in debt to his friend. Clothing rested his head on his desk and watched M sleep. Maybe M would wake up soon? He got more sleep than Clothing and the help would be appreciated. M did in fact wake up after a short while; also not in the best states of mind. After looking over the new dress and throwing the old one in the garbage, both men hung over the desk in a slump.
They took a short nap until they heard the door chime. The girl had arrived for her dress. Mmm... Mr. Giraffe? Is my dress? She stopped short as she saw the dress she had brought in to him in the trash. She couldn't see the one he had made yet since it was behind one of the partitions. Tears pooled in her eyes.
It's alright. Clothing said standing up. He went to the back room and wheeled the manikin out to the girl. When he came out with it however, there was a woman standing there as well. Everyone stood there in silence. The woman was shocked to see two pets in the store, the girl was staring at the dress, and Clothing was unsure of where to look so he just looked at M. Clothing took the dress off the manikin and hung it on a hanger. This is your dress. Clothing broke the silence. The other one was um, beyond repair I'm afraid.
The woman took the dress. Show me the other one. She eyed the trash barrel. Clothing looked at the girl for a moment before actually taking the dress out and showing it to the woman. This is how it was brought to me. He laid it flat on the floor so she could see it better.
The woman began to cry but Clothing didn't dwell on it too much; it wasn't any of his business after all, he was just the guy who did repairs. The woman bowed deeply and pushed the little girls head down with her. Thank you.
Clothing bowed too but not fast enough. The woman and the girl were already out of the store and they had taken the gross dress with them. It wasn't a big deal. Clothing told M he would get the money; he always did. They both went to bed again, M just stayed in the shop with Clothing and slept on the couch. Clothing retreated to his room very proud of his work.
Later that day, the chime of the bell woke Clothing from his sleep. Excuse me, came a voice that sounded so distant. Clothing craned his neck to see into the shop; the mother from earlier was looking around the shop. He got up and walked over to greet her. She peered at him. This was not unusual behavior; everyone Clothing has met at work has given him that look. What is your name. She asked. He stared at her for a moment before looking down, embarrassed. Clothing. He said plainly. Clothing. She smirked. I will remember. She turned around to leave but not before sneaking a small envelope on his desk. Once the woman left, Clothing woke M, who was able to sleep through the entire conversation, and got him to set up the shop with him. It was a bit jumbled from the job they had just finished. Clothing had to set up the tie displays and put the partitions back in the closet. It wasn't much work but they were both still feeling the effects of not sleeping.
When M went back home, Clothing started working on more ties. He was hoping that by having extra ties out, he could make double the sales to make up for the loss of the day. While setting up the new ties and fidgeting with his desk, he found the envelope from the woman. He opened the envelope and out came $5000 and a letter. The dress you fixed was for my wedding. I wanted it to be perfect. My daughter was to present the ring, she was so beautiful. I am sponsoring you privately. You should become a tailor. It is your calling. You work extremely well with a reference; I believe you could also do well with a description. He called M immediately and told him to come over in the morning. That morning, immediately after M walked through the door, Clothing threw $1000 at him. The initial shock took a minute to set in. What's all of this? M asked through a huge grin.
Money. Clothing got a little giddy. I'm going to become a tailor. He handed M the letter.
The woman walked in almost on cue, along with a bunch of other people. This is the pet I told you about. The one who made the dress.
The stares that came after could have killed someone who was unprepared. I'm not sure if you could call that a man. *Cough* Clothing was not amused and neither was the woman. Who are these people? They all had handfuls of paper and a few had paint cans. What's going on? Clothing asked.
We're here to renovate your shop. Please step out for a few hours. The woman had everyone start working and both M and Clothing were pretty much forced from the store. Hey, M began. Why don't we pick up the rest of our things from the Adoption Center? Looks like your life in turning around. He smiled and hurried Clothing along. They tore through their respective rooms and packed up everything they thought they'd need. Since they were technically still connected to the Center, they had to leave enough stuff in their rooms so the staff wouldn't get suspicious. On their way out, Clothing was stopped. Sir, there is a person here who is looking to adopt you.
What Clothing turned around and saw a man. He would later learn that they would be inseparable friends. Now, Clothing has a bustling business. He couldn't look any more professional sporting his first tie and a monocle (for precision). Many people come to have wears made by him and there has never been an unsatisfied customer. Quest is ever supportive of Clothing and Clothing has nothing but respect for Quest. It is not a pet/owner relationship that they have but a friendship. One that will last forever.
