A humble shop owner was all Evance considered himself. He sold small clocks, large clocks, alarm clocks, wrist watches, pocket watches... All items of the time-keeping sort were scattered around his modest, but rather messy, shop. The ticking would be enough to drive anyone mad, he supposed, but not himself. He enjoyed it. It was like company to him. Every second of every hour that he busied himself with his work was filled with that delightful tick tock.
He was a skilled man of his trade. He prided himself in being able to fix just about any problem with any watch or clock you could bring him. And if he couldn't, well then he guessed that item's time was up.
He chuckled to himself at his silly pun. Oh, time humor. Evance was working diligently at his desk to fix a new client's pocket watch. The man had appeared earlier in the day, seeming rather abnormally distraught at the fact that his watch was no longer functional. Since he was a new customer, Evance was more determined than ever to fix it swiftly and perfectly. He simply must make good impressions on these sorts of people. They are, after all, the ones who keep his business running.
"Why, there's the problem," He muttered to himself, pulling his desk lamp down closer to illuminate the array of metal in front of him. "It seems that the regulator lever is missing. Now, I wonder how he managed to lose that..."
Evance pushed back hard with his legs and his desk chair went wheeling across the wooden floor, making a rather pleasant thumping noise as it went. He jumped from his seat as he approached the other side of his shop where there were at least twenty drawers labeled with various watch parts.Springs, hands, faces, wheels, bridges... ah, there they are. He slid open the drawer labeled "Regulators" and the heap of oddly shaped metal pieces clanked against the wooden walls of the drawer. Evance pulled one out, shutting the drawer with a quick nudge, before sitting back into his chair and thrusting himself across the room again. That was always fun.
He adjusted his seat at his desk before placing the lever in its correct place within the clockwork machinery. He tightened the sparkling metal in place and replaced the pieces around it that he'd removed prior. After he finished fixing up the inside he closed the watch once again and looked at the craftsmanship for the first time. It was really a lovely pocket watch. The owner must have taken care of it extremely well for the silver to still shine like it was new. There was an interesting engraving on the cover that seemed to be in a language Evance didn't know, or maybe it was just ornate decoration. He couldn't say for sure. Something about it seemed fascinating and foreign to him though.
"Perhaps I'll ask the owner where he got such a gorgeous thing," Evance mused absentmindedly as he opened the case to observe the hands moving smoothly around the face of the watch as he wound it back to the correct time. There were two dials on the face of the watch, one for the regular hour and minute set up most people are used to, and one for what he could only assume were the seconds. He synced the hour and minute hands to the clock in front of him that read 3:47 then moved to rotate the second button that must go to the unique looking second hand dial.
He gave the knob a gentle twist but the hand hardly seemed to move at all. Was something else wrong with the watch? Evance gave it another sure twist, and the hand moved a fraction. There, it must have just been stuck a bit. He glanced back up at the clock to try his best to sync the seconds together, but to his dismay, it now read 12:53.
"What in the world?" He gasped, looking around at the hundreds of other clocks in the store. They all said the same, 12:53. He glanced out the window next to his shop's door and noticed it was dark.
"How did... what... I..." Evance sputtered, dumbfounded, as he stared at this mysterious watch on his desk.
He snatched it up again, moved to stare intently out the window and gave this "second hand dial" another firm twist and he watched, speechless, as the sun rose rapidly over the other buildings, beginning a new day, and people moved in fast forward down the sidewalks. His jaw hung slack and he couldn't remember if he was even breathing. This was... insane. And amazing. But scary. Yet... he couldn't resist the curiosity. He smiled down at the brilliant device and the face seemed to taunt him, egging him on to turn that unknown dial once more, and so he grasped onto it, heart racing, and twisted.
