Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The ticking of the Eternal Clock was the only sound which broke the silence. The air lay heavy and thick, like a layer of dust blanketing an area, undisturbed for many ages. A quiet surrounded and cloaked the area - a silence that would have been near unbearable, except for the rhythmic interruption of the clock.

Shiiryou breathed in deeply and looked about. His eyes flickered about the room, taking inventory of his stock. Before him lay shelves upon shelves of various timepieces. Pocket watches stopped at various times. Hourglasses with their sand only half fallen. Grandfather clocks whose hands were just about to strike twelve. Various metals shone from their glass and wood encasings. Almost it seemed a rainbow, so varied were the wooden hues. Shiiryou closed his eyes and went over them all in his mind. He could see every instrument in its proper place, all at once, though they took up an infinite amount of space. The pieces were all stuck, at various times, one for each moment. Only the Eternal Clock went on, unbound to the time of mortal lives.

Shiiryou flexed his great wings and his burnt orange scales glimmered in the light. With one great bound, he leapt in the air and took to the skies. He had no worries about crashing into either the ceiling or the walls, for space had no meaning in this place. It was nowhere and it was everywhere. All that mattered was time: past, present, and future rolled into one.

The dragon took no heed of his direction, but trusted his senses to lead him to the place he sought. In truth, he could just have easily called the place to him, bending space to fit his needs, but he enjoyed the rush of the wind beneath his wings. His heart thrilled to feel the ground drop away beneath him as he climbed into the insurmountable skies. Shiiryou reached toward the sky, glad to have the opportunity to stretch his wings. Vast expanses opened before him and the limitless sky invited him to bask in its glory.

At last, he began his descent. Shiiryou was content to let himself glide for a time, but then abruptly swooped into a dive. His forelegs extended out below him, bracing for the landing. Despite the dragon's massive size, Shiiryou alighted on the ground as gracefully as any swan.

Before him lay a great table, upon which a small instrument was quietly humming. Microscopic gears whirred and displayed a half-finished astrolabe. Upon closer inspection, Shiiryou could make out the faint outlines of stars. The light grew brighter with every passing moment, recording the date of some new event. The dragon narrowed his golden eyes, piercing the new item and seeing into the time which it recorded. Astrolabes were rare; he had himself only seen a hundred of them form and his bones were as old and timeless as Time itself.

Shiiryou's eyesight grew hazy and he found himself looking, not at the astrolabe, but at an open range of land that fell abruptly into the sea. A young boy, not even in his teens, looked out at the edge of a cliff. Though he was dressed in simple, practical dress, he was clothed in a nobleness that made his garments seem fit for a king. An inner light shone from him, brightening the surrounding landscape. None stood about him as his eyes gazed out at the stormy waters below. A glint of metal shone from his right hand. Bare steel flashed as he stood with his sword unsheathed. Raising it in defiance of some unknown power, he brandished the blade against the heavens.

Shiiryou withdrew from the moment. This boy was evidently one to watch. Collecting the timepiece carefully, the dragon strode to find a proper place for it on the many shelves. He came at last to an empty spot, just the size for the astrolabe, as it it were made for it - for indeed, that spot was made for it. He placed it cautiously in its spot.

Once again, orange scales gleamed as he took to the sky. There were many moments in time to preserve, some greater than others, but all equally important for the Keeper of Time.
