Magic has a price. You either pay it, or you get someone else to pay it for you, with or against their will. Beckstrom pays the price for her magic, in migraines and bruises sometimes memory loss. She takes aspirin for the pain and keeps a journal for the forgetting. All in all, it's a small price to pay for the good she does for the innocent people of her city.

She's not alone in responding to the call, either. She has her companion, Stone by her side, and a handsome stranger-slash-sometimes rescuer who both lend a hand when Beckstrom gets too far in over her head. It's not her fault she comes from a family that couldn't be more different from her if they tried. At least, that's what she tells herself when she has to clean up their messes, again.

Still, it's a good life, if you asked her. And never boring, that's for sure. Magic always has a price to pay, but living among it, breathing it, feeling it, tasting it, every day like Beckstrom does, is always worth the cost.
