It had been a long day.

I was at my usual post adjacent the pool of water I visit nearly everyday since the wee hours of the morning. My back hurt from arching, my shoulders ached with each movement, and the sun had drained my energy. My hat was the only protection I had from the sun's potent rays, but even with it I couldn't help but overheat. Any ordinary person wouldn't last an hour in my condition, but this is what I lived for.
By then the sun was getting ready to touch the edges of the horizon. Shadows were thrown about, and it was significantly cooler compared to midday.
This meant it was time for me to turn in. Ordinarily I'd return home to a fully prepared meal from my wife, but I was alone now. She had up and left me twelve years ago for a "better world," and I'd been by myself ever since. I would have to do the cooking to feed myself, but I couldn't even do that. My supplies were down, and going home with empty hands wouldn't help them. No one would've minded if I stayed a little longer...
And that's when it happened.
It was shaking. It was moving enough to create ripples in the water. It was tugging...WHOA was it tugging.
I pulled on the string attached to my cheap fishing pole, the one Grandpap had given me all those years ago when I was just a youngin'. Although it is worthless, the worn piece of junk has sustained me for the 55 years it's been in my possession. I owe it my life.
"Well hey there, feller!"
This was the fish I'd been waiting patiently for all day. It was green, a dirty green that you'd only find outdoors, with dark spots on its back. It had a large mouth too, which made the hook look like an ant attached to its lips.
I yanked harder before taking a step back to get a better look - at my age, your vision fades pretty quickly - and rested my strained muscles. It took me a second before I realized what I'd caught. Fish never weighed that much: it was the big one.
