I curled around my babies, my four beautiful pups. I watched as there pointed little noses nuzzled into my belly, each one finding a warm source of milk. I kept watching the entrance to our cozy white home, expecting their father to come scurrying down the tunnel with some kind of rodent in his mouth. The afternoon sunlight quickly faded and we were left alone with just the sounds of the winters breeze. It was late at night when i noticed small fragments of snow falling from the roof of our den and heard the pitter patter of feet, suddenly two glowing yellow eyes appeared out of the tunnel followed by a thick white mane and voluminous tail, it was Chilam, my mate. A plump brown hare hung lifeless in his mouth. He dropped it at my front paws and continued over to carefully inspect our precious family, sniffing and licking them one by one. Overcome by hunger i ripped into the hare, leaving no more than remnants of its blood soaked fur. I lay next to Chilam, his head resting on my shoulders. The harsh winters wind had now subsided and we were met with a soft sunlight. One month had passed and our pups were now ready for their first venture out into the arctic plains. I watched Chilam's eyes dart from left to right trying to keep watch over all four pups who were rolling and tousling with each other, snapping at each others ears. Our smallest pup, Lumi, let out a small yelp when her ear was pulled too hard by her sister. Chilam wandered over and picked up the culprit, Robin, by the scruff of the neck and proceeded towards the tunnels exit. Lumi and the others scampered after their father.
