Born into a noble family with a loving mother and daring father, I grew up as a rather good-natured child. My father was the bravest Ontra in the seven seas and my mother was the most lavish and beautiful Tutani in the ocean.

I'd always thought my parents were as different as night and day, and that resulting difference made me unique. You see, their inter-species marriage had caused some controversy and everyone had wondered whether I'd be a Tutani or an Ontra. Surprisingly, I turned into a one of a kind species with the head of an Ontra and a tail of a Tutani.

My parents cherished me and loved me even more because I was unique and named me Turquoise for the color of the constantly sparkling gemstone of the sea. I grew up comfortable and loved in the security of my parents' embraces.

I was so sheltered, however, that I grew up a self-conscious child - extremely shy and thin-skinned. My first experience of going to school was frightening in the least...

I had protested by flicking my tail rapidly and screaming that I wouldn't go. My mother was startled at this behavior.

"Turquoise, you'll love school!" my mother had cried. But eventually I was persuaded and my parents took that opportunity and brought me to school. Sure I supposed to learn and grow, but I was terrified of the other species... Would I be considered a freak?

Once I arrived at school everybody went silent. I fidgeted nervously but I thought I glimpsed friendliness on the other students' faces. I was beginning to relax and took a deep breath. Once my parents left, however, I was in for a big surprise.

A Chelon came up to me and smirked, eyeing my mismatched body. "Who are you? You look weird" he said, poking me quite rudely. "Yeah, you shouldn't be in school, you should be at a circus" a Torrent mocked. It was hard, but I ignored all their taunting and teasing and survived the first day.

When I went home, I didn't tell my mother a thing. Perhaps it was so I wouldn't admit that things were so bad to myself. My parents literally had to drag me to school the next day. It wasn't any better and the taunting had only grown worse. At lunch time, the kids had progressed to throwing food at me. I needed to escape.

I swam as fast as I could and found a secret spot that was seemingly deserted. Panting and swimming much slower now, I bumped into someone. I gasped. Did one of those kids find me?? But I was in for a surprise, as I turned around and looked around at the other pet. We both exclaimed "you look just like me!" and examined each other's similar appearances.

"I'm Splash" she said, introducing herself and smiled. I smiled back. "Turquoise, pleasure to meet you" I replied. We both said at the same time "do you want to be friends?" and resolved into giggles. She shrugged. "Sure, I have no other friends, the other kids tease me too much."

I'd never forget my first meeting with her and our subsequent friendship. Teasing didn't really affect me anymore now that I had a friend.

Soon enough, Splash and I became best friends. Her friendship was valued as it gave me a sense of happiness. My parents were pleased at my eagerness to go to school, albeit a bit confused. They wondered what brought the sudden change in my behavior, but decided not to question my cheerfulness.

As we grew up, I discovered and focused on my passion for directing. It started when we had to make a commercial for an elective in middle school. I worked tirelessly on the project, while almost forgetting about all my other schoolwork. The final product was a catchy commercial that earned me a 100%. My teacher saw a potential I possessed and suggested I enter the National Subeta Directors of the Future. The reward was a chance to work with highly respected professionals to create your own movie released in theaters.

The competition was highly prestigious, and I had doubts about entering. However, it was Splash who convinced me to give it a try. She said” If you win, that’s great Turquoise! If you lose, it’s experience. Don’t let the opportunity go to waste.” With her encouragement, I decided to heed her words and go for it.

At the competition, the prompt was to make a trailer in an hour with actors randomly given to us. The stress and tension was building as everyone rushed to meet the deadline to create a trailer that eventually would pave way for a future as a professional director. My discovery was that I worked surprisingly well under pressure. At the warning for ten minutes left, I was adding finishing touches to the trailer.

As they called time, I breathed a sigh of relief. I had just finished the final add-ons. We all submitted our work, hands shaking and shivers pulsing through every vein. They called of other pet’s names for the top 20, and I’m sad to say, but I wasn’t paying attention. Finally, they announced the winner. It was me! I still thank Splash to this day for the push she gave me.

Directing my first movie was a blissful experience. I was a novice, but said by my coworkers that I acted like an experienced professional. Finally, after two years of filming and editing, it was ready.

My first movie ever focused on the trials and tribulations of two childhood friends as they grew up, basing it off of my own friendship with Splash. At the premiere, there was not one dry eye in the theater. Ratings were extraordinary and my career as a director quickly took off after that.

Soon enough, I was quite rich and famous. But more importantly, I was a daughter who my parents were very proud of. I released many more movies, and they kids who had teased me once were now in awe and begging to be my friend. I looked at them pityingly, but turned away since I had finally understood what it was like to have genuine and loving relationships with other people.
