It was a beautiful, sweet Saturday morning in Subeta when Sugar abruptly awoke from her night's slumber. Her fluffy, marshmallow-white pillow was soft and inviting, but Sugar could not remain in bed. Her stubby feet carried her as quickly as she could waddle over to her candy-themed calendar on her hot pink wall, where she had circled just one day in a peppermint red marker. Today would be the single best day of the year, because it was her birthday.

Sugar's next stop was the kitchen pantry, where she had stashed the most important items of the day: goody bags, stuffed full of every kind of imaginable sweet, from lollipops to gumdrops and everything in between! There were chocolate bars and candy stars, and gummy bears and jelly squares. Sugar had spent all week long preparing these goody bags to give out to all her friends across Subeta so that they could celebrate with her on this joyful day. Sugar took a basket and loaded it up with all of the goody bags, then headed out into the sunshine.

Her first stop was the home of her dear friend, Sunny Sky the mallarchy. Sunny Sky was an honorary sun spirit, and as such, she always knew how to brighten Sugar's day. Sugar knocked on Sunny's door and waited. Sunny came to the door and smiled, though she looked a bit out of breath.

"Sugar!" she puffed, "always a pleasure!"
"Why thank you, Sunny! I bet you know just why I'm here." Sugar beamed, but Sunny Sky frowned, pondering a moment.
"Oh no, I'm afraid I don't. Is there something going on today?" asked Sunny.

Sugar's face fell. Sunny Sky didn't remember her birthday? But she was one of her very best friends. Maybe she'd just forgotten.
"Are you suuuure you can't think of anything special about todayyyy?" Sugar prompted, beaming bigger this time. Sunny Sky shrugged.
"Can't be too important if I didn't remember it! Hey, what's in the basket?" Sunny asked. Sugar pouted, but reached into the basket and handed Sunny a goody bag.
"Just candy," Sugar said, turning away from the door disappointedly.
"Thanks, Sugar! You're the best!"

Sugar made her way to the home of her friend, Scoops. Scoops was one of the friends she got along with best of all, because she had a passion for ice cream that matched Sugar's love for candy. Surely scoops would remember Sugar's birthday. After all, birthdays were usually celebrated with ice cream. She knocked excitedly on Scoops's door and waited. Scoops came to the door carrying a teetering six-scoop ice cream cone, which looked a bit precarious.
"Oh dear," Sugar said, putting her basket down. "Can I help you with that?"
"No, no!" Scoops replied quickly. "I've got it under control! No help needed!"
"Oooo-kay." Sugar picked up her basket again, reaching in. "Well, I've got something for you in honor of tooooday."
"Today?" Scoops asked. "What's today?"

Sugar's face fell more than it had the first time. Scoops didn't remember her birthday either? How could this be? She gave out candy goodies to her friends each and every year on her birthday. Why had Scoops and Sunny forgotten about her?

"Well, anyway, I really have to go finish what i'm doing, Sugar," Scoops said, gesturing to her wobbling scoops and causing one of them to almost fall off. "I don't really have time to talk right now. Give it to me later?"
"Um... sure," Sugar said as the door closed in her face. She sighed and looked down the dirt path to each of her friends' houses. Would any of them remember her?

Sugar visited each and every one of her closest friends that afternoon, and although a few of them accepted her goody bags, not a single one of them remembered that it was her birthday. By the time Sugar reached her front door once again, she was a real glum-drop. Maybe she just wasn't important to her friends anymore. She decided to just go home and eat the rest of her birthday candy all by herself. She opened the door and walked into the dark house.

"SURPRISE!"

Sugar gasped as the lights turned on to reveal a gigantic celebration, and all of her friends jumped out. There were balloons, streamers, and a huge candy cake in the middle of the room. Sugar was practically speechless.

"Happy birthday, Sugar!" cried her friend, Trixie Twitchytail.
"This is for me?" Sugar asked. "But... but nobody remembered my birthday!"
"Oh, Sugar," said Scoops with a laugh. "We all remembered your birthday. We've had this surprise party planned for weeks! We had to tell you that so you wouldn't be suspicious!"
"I blew up all the balloons this afternoon," said Sunny Sky.
"And i was in charge of the ice cream and candy bar!" Scoops added.
"But... why?" Sugar asked.
"You're always so sweet, giving out goodies and treats on your birthday every year," said her friend, Whalehelmina. "We just wanted to give you something back."
Sugar was near tears. She picked up a confetti popper and popped it so the confetti fell everywhere.
"You guys are the best friends anyone could have."
