------------

She was back again, in the heart of London, perching upon one of the cotton-like clouds that loomed over the busy streets and merry parks. It had been a long time since her last visit and an even longer time since she had seen the Banks family, although she had not returned to help them, not this time at least. With her delicate fingertips snapping her powder compact shut and bright blue eyes narrowing as she gazed down at the busy streets, Mary took ahold of her parrot-carved brolly handle and hopped down from her comfy, sky-high seat- that was after opening it up, of course, so that she could gracefully sail towards the land below.

Mary's perfectly polished shoes landed upon the paved street with a light 'clip-clop', whilst her free hand set about adjusting the black, tulip-adorned hat that lightly rested upon her dark hair. With her red lips curved into a warm smile and fair cheeks glowing with a round, rosy blush, the nanny set about closing her brolly and nodding to herself as she scouted the many tall homes that lined the sidewalk she had landed upon. Luckily (and with a helping pinch of her 'magic'), the hustle and bustle of the early morning city life had all but vanished during her landing and had left Mary with the entire street to to herself.

"Hmmm…" she mumbled as she allowed the hand that was not clutching at her umbrella to rummage in one of her jackets pockets, in search of a crumpled sheet of paper. It was as she looked for that elusive note, that Mary's gentle pupils settled upon a nearby park entrance. The sight of it alone, despite being almost empty, was more than enough to make the nanny's soft smile grow even wider and rosy cheeks blush a little darker. "Oh Bert…" she whispered to herself, whilst enjoying a moment of nostalgia- despite her location being far from where Bert resided. It wasn't long before her smile had dropped a little, however, so that she could summon back her usual prim and proper, yet friendly, exterior. With her eyes diverting from the open park, Mary cleared her throat and finally pulled out the note she had been searching for.

"House number NUMBERTOBEDECIDED, PLACETOBEDECIDED." she recited from heart, before reading the scrawled address upon the tatty note in front of her. "Well, this certainly is the place" the house in question, was in a sorry state indeed, for it was not as neatly kept as all the other luxurious homes that neighbored it. Not only was the lawn terribly over grown, but the windows were covered in grime and dirt, suggesting that the place- as well as its owners, was in dire need of TLC- alongside a bit of cleaning up. "Tsk, tsk, tsk, dreadful" the nanny's brows furrowed ever so slightly as her bright eyes took in the sore sight. "Still, its nothing that cannot be fixed!" with a satisfied and determined nod of her head, Mary thrust the crumpled up paper back into her pocket and placed her hands upon her hips. She allowed her soft pupils to take one last glance at the grubby, unloved building, before she finally dared to make her way past the jungle that had grown outside and towards the door. When reaching the final step (or remnants of what used to be a perfectly good step, rather), the woman took back a deep inhale and set about adjusting her hat once more, before reaching out with one of her dainty hands. She knocked three times and no more, before setting her arm back down by her side and patiently waiting. The small, parrot-like head on the end of her brolly had turned to comment on the less than delightful environment, but was swiftly silenced by a sharp glare from Mary as she slid back the straps of her large carpet bag- which had been hanging from the same hand that clutched at her umbrella.

It was a long time before any life could be heard, let alone seen and Mary was left loitering upon the doorstep for quite some time - not that it deterred her. The man that opened the door was as broken as the house itself, if not more so, with unkempt HAIRTOBEDECIDED and nails as dirty as the grimy window ledges. He reeked of both sweat and alcohol and it made her wrinkle up her nose for just a moment or so. "Mr. NAMEOFCHARACTERTOBEDECIDED?" Mary questioned, whilst tilting her head up a little, in a fruitless attempt to avoid the wafting stench of booze. "Y-Yeah… uh" the man replied, between trying to clear his throat and wiping at his sore eyes. He felt as groggy as he looked rough, and it hadn't gone unnoticed to the nanny.
"Good, then I am in the right place- just as I suspected, despite the lack of door number"
"Huh? Oh…" the man replied, before leaning out of the doorway to unsteadily follow Mary's gaze. She was right, there was no number or even a house sign. Either the weather had claimed it over the years he had left the property unloved, or he had simply forgotten to replace the old numbers when he had moved in. He couldn't remember, or say that he cared either way, however.
"I'm sorry, but who ar--"
"Mary Poppins"
"Mary Pop... Poppins?"
"Yes, Mary Poppins. One 'pop', don't repeat yourself. I am the nanny that you advertised for"
"Nanny?" INSERTMANNAMEHERE mumbled, before scratching at his wiry and untidy beard. He didn't recall advertising for a nanny, although truth be told, he couldn't remember much of the days, weeks and even years that had passed. His life had become one big blur and he lived solely for his drink and the memories of his wife, whom had passed many seasons ago."Yes, a nanny. Is something the matter? I'm pretty sure that I fill all of the requirements" the woman interrupted INSERTMANNAMEHERE's trail of thought before he could even begin to dwell on the past and greeted his diverted attention with a small, yet warm smile. "There are a couple of spelling mistakes, well, more than a couple and the writing is terrible... for the most part, but I do believe that I am reading it right. Ahem." With her smile remaining, Mary reached into her pocket and pulled out the crumpled piece of paper once more. "Dear whomever it may concern, there should be an 'a' in that word, not double 'e', by the way. My father is struggling and my aunt wishes to take me away. I don't want to go with her, I want to stay with him. He's been terribly sad and although I try to help, things have not gotten any better. I fear that I will have to go to live with INSERTNAMEOFAUNTHERE and I do not want that, so I am asking for a nanny to take care of me, so that I can stay with my father. We don't have much money, or much of anything, but I promise to be good and not much work- I can give you my pocket money and savings, from Birthdays and Holidays. I just want someone who is kind and understanding and someone who will make my father smile again. Well, I can't promise that, as I have no control over your face, but I am both kind and understanding- although I will warn you, I am also firm." as Mary continued on in reading the letter, INSERTNAMEOFFATHERHERE's attention slowly began to drift and wander. It was all coming back to him now, the note and its contents.

LATER SEGMENT

Mary noticed the small GENDEROFCHILDTOBEDECIDED hiding upstairs and on the landing almost instantly, for there was no mistaking his/her overjoyed and hopeful face. With a reassuring smile and loving gaze, the nanny nodded to the child, before turning her attention back to the shell of a man she assumed to be the father.

Well I never! How dare you put forth such a ridiculous accusation! Really, how preposterous. I have not done a thing with your drink, much less turned it into strawberry squash!
